Objectives:
1. This activity will provide the student with a deeper understanding of urban and regional
planning.
2. This will also help the students become aware of and appreciate the complexity of the issues
(physical, social, economic and environmental) surrounding urban planning.
3. The student is tasked to explore the historical component of the urban core.
4. This task will also determine the built-up density of urban barangays including the road
networks.
Procedure:
1. Download a satellite image of the urban core of your chosen town from Google earth or google
map. Insert the image in Autocad or any Computer Aided Program.
2. Scale the image using the generated bar scale on the map.
3. Prepare two maps; first is the satellite image of the urban core and second the built-up map.
Outline or trace the built-up areas consisting of buildings, roads, bodies of water (if applicable)
and natural vegetation. Identify landmarks and point of interest on the second map through the
use of typical map symbols for structures or buildings.
4. Layout the map using A3 size paper and the standard color codes provided by HLURB to indicate
the type of use. The layout should also include legend, northing, bar scale and name of urban
barangays.
5. If available, add the administrative boundaries of the urban barangays to the built-up map.

6. Extract and scale up some significant part of the core where most social and economic activities
converge. This interactive feature allows the viewer to explore and appreciate the map in
greater detail.

Internal Factors- assets and operational efficiencies.
a. Internal Strength -strongest asset, competitive advantage, existing resources, what
is performing well
b. Weaknesses- characteristics that place the built environment at a disadvantage i.e.,
Areas for improvement, lacking resources
External Factors- policies
c. Opportunities -elements in the environment that can provide opportunities for
improvement, new policies and development
d. Threats- elements in the environment that can cause problem to future development.
RUBRICS
The grading system for this activity will use rubric scoring tool which demonstrate four level
performance category and five scoring level. This serves as a guideline to follow in order to complete the
work to the best of your ability and areas that may need improvement in order for you to score the
maximum number of points required from the output.
