CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE MUSIC

INTRODUCTION

Music during Romantic period has been mostly expressive in showing emotions in
different kinds of situation. During that period Music has been regarded as the artform
that shows complete human emotions, ranging from individuality to nationalism.
It is during the Romantic Period where composer discover and invent musical
techniques to functionally express themselves towards their perception of the things that
is happening during those times.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

Singing - is an art using the voice to communicate one’s emotions through


creative vocal production

Vocal Range – Is the high pitch and low pitch an individual could reach

Vocal Timbre – is one’s voice quality which gives personality to a performance.

Classifications of voice – is identifying the kind of voice a person have through


range and timbre.

Basic Classification of voices:

Soprano – sopranos are high pitched female singers


Alto – altos are the low-pitched female singers
Tenor – tenors are the high-pitched male singers
Bass – basses are the low-pitched male singers

Vocal style – is defined as a term that distinguish one singer to another.

Genre – is the classification of a music depending on its style, characteristic, form,


function, tradition and time it was pre-valent.

Example of Genre base on styles: reggae, rock, hip-hop, blues, jazz etc.
Example of Genre base on function: religious, patriotic and educational etc.
Example of Genre base on time: medieval, romantic, classical, contemporary etc.
Example of Genre base on tradition: folk songs, religious etc.

Always remember that each genre is interchangeable and very subjective in


nature.

Contemporary Music – are music that was created from 1940’s onward.

Select and perform one contemporary Filipino Music.

Instructions: How to select the appropriate song that suits you for a better
performance.
1. List at least 10 of your favorite Filipino songs
2. From the 10 songs that you have selected, choose the songs which is suited to
your gender.
If you are a boy select the songs produced by male singers
If you are a girl select the songs produced by female singers
3. Out of those selected songs select again songs that is suited to your range.
If you are a boy with high pitch (tenor), select a song that is performed by a
high-pitched male singer
If you are a boy with low pitch (bass), select a song that is performed by a
low-pitched male singer
If you are a girl with high pitch (soprano), select a song that is performed by
a high-pitched female singer
If you are a girl with low pitch (alto), select a song that is performed by a
low-pitched female singer
4. Practice and memorize the song
5. Interpret or perform the song by applying style and appropriate expression.
6. Evaluate your performance based on the rubrics below.
