This document discusses electrical enclosures and raceways. It defines enclosures as boxes or cabinets that protect wiring, connections, and equipment from damage. There are various types of enclosures intended for different environments and degrees of protection. Raceways are enclosed conduits that form pathways for wiring while allowing access for installation and maintenance. Other topics covered include electrical boxes, junction boxes, busways, wireways, and electric motors.

1. Welcome the last part of Building Electrical Service Equipment
2. This topic is focused on “enclosures” and “Raceways” 3. Enclosures are electrical boxes and cabinets made of metal or non-metallic material like plastic to provide protection for conductors, connections, controls, and other electrical equipment (P) 4. (They protect the wiring, devices, and equipment from damage and deterioration from accidental contact, wear, corrosive atmospheric exposure, and sunlight. In cases where the enclosed conductors, connections, controls, electrical equipment are faulty, enclosures contain the arc and flame that result, thereby confining damage from fire.) 5. (There are various types of enclosures). First is the type 1 or the general type. It is intended for indoor use primarily where not exposed to unusual service conditions (to provide protection against accidental contact with enclosed apparatus) 6. Type 2 or the drip tight is for indoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against limited amounts of falling water. 7. Type 3, the weatherproof which is intended for 8. Type 3R, the raintight. This kind of enclosure protect against entrance of water from a beating rain (suitable for general outdoor application not requiring sleet proof). 9. Type 4, the watertight. It is intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against windblown, dust and rain, splashing water and hose-directed water during cleaning operations. 10. There are other types of enclosures and each of those has its own specifications for an intended purpose. 11. Electrical box is a kind of enclosure which can be either made of metal or non-metal material. It holds devices such as switches or outlets and safely permit wiring connection. 12. Boxes are available in four primary shapes. It can be either square, rectangular, octagonal or round. (These boxes can be joined together or are manufactured to accommodate multiple outlets or switches). 13. Junction boxes or J-boxes are special type of electrical box used to enclose conductor connections. 14. A type of junction box called pull box allows access to a raceway for sneaking conductors through the raceway. 15. The second part is the conduit, raceways, busways, wireways, and electric motors. (although when discussing wire management, both raceways and conduits are used interchangeably. However, the two are different tools that actually have different roles). 16. Conduits are metal tubes that protect electrical wiring and cables. Once the wiring has been installed into a conduit, it becomes difficult to access. (The electrical conduits are typically come in metallic silver color so it is better suited for industrial applications). 17. A raceway is an enclosed conduit that forms a physical pathway for electrical wiring. Raceways protect wires and cables from heat, humidity, corrosion, water intrusion and general physical threats. Unlike conduits, raceways allow you to access the wiring inside its tube after the installation process. (In some cases, metal raceways that are fully bounded serve to provide a path for the flow of fault current to ground). 18. Busway is a prefabricated electrical distribution system consisting of bus bars in a protective enclosure, including straight lengths, fittings, devices and accessories. Busway transports electricity and connects to electrical gear such as switchgear, panelboards and transformers. 19. (Busway is an excellent alternative to cable and conduit in commercial and industrial applications because it’s not as complex to configure, less expensive to install and easier to replace, especially in applications where load locations are likely to change). 20. There are various components of busways. These are busbars (known as conductors which simply conduct electricity), Housing (an aluminum or steel enclosure to contain the busbars), Insulating system (made of a combination of air, epoxy and mylar; it separates the conductors from each other to prevent electrical faults, and the fittings (which help to properly route busway from one electrical connection or termination) 21. Wireway is slim, a closed passage that houses electrical wires and is mainly comprised of aluminum. Channel letters are connected to wireways the same way they would connect to a raceway. (The sole advantage is that a wireway is not a huge panel. Landlords will usually ask for tenants of a shopping plaza or similar location to use wireways over raceways because they are smaller in size and therefore less of an issue upon removal). 22. There are various types of wireways. First, the Lay-in. One side of trough opens via hinges; wires may be laid in instead of pulled through. Second is the pull-through. Wires or cables must be strung through; may still have a hinged lid to allow cable access. Lastly, the cable through which is simple trough with no cover. 23. And finally, the electric motors. Electric motor is an electric machine that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. Most electric motors work via the interaction of the motor magnetic field and electrical current in a wound wire to produce force in the manner of torque supplied on the motor shaft. (an electrical generator is identical mechanically to electric motors. Only that it functions in a reversed flow of energy. Electric generator converts mechanical power to electrical power) 24. (electric motors are found in refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, kitchen sink waste disposal, portable kitchen appliances, and others) https://www.canva.com/design/DAFMAk-c_2M/z7fNIxjT2V1PjikAW_eUdA/edit? utm_content=DAFMAk- c_2M&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=sharebutton
