III. Learning Activities

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. ENGAGE
1. Drill
Okay class, how are you today? We’re fine Ma’am/sir.

That is good to hear! Now, I have

here set of flashcards and I want (the pupils will read the words written on
you to read them as I flash them the flashcards)
to you. Is that understood?
Filter Residue Filtrate
Sieve settle pick

2. Review
Very good! Okay so last meeting
we discussed about the Kinds of Ma’am/sir, the two types of mixtures are the
Mixtures. What are the two kinds Homogeneous and Heterogeneous.
of Mixtures, again?

Very good and what is a Heterogeneous Mixture A combination

Heterogeneous? which does not have a uniform composition

Very good and what is a Homogenous? Homogenous Mixture Is a Mixture that

possess the same properties and combination
throughout their mass

(the teacher shows a pictures of

mixtures) I have here pictures and I
want you to identify which kinds of Yes ma’am/sir,
mixture they belong. Is that clear?

Okay here we go,

What kind of mixture is this?

Ma’am/sir, it’s a heterogeneous mixture.

Great! How about the next

picture?

Ma’am/sir, It’s a homogeneous mixture.

Very good! How about this picture?

Ma’am/sir, it’s a heterogeneous mixture.

Very good! How about this picture?

Ma’am/sir, It’s a homogeneous mixture.

And this last picture?

Ma’am/sir, It’s a homogeneous mixture.

Very Good!.
It’s wonderful that you fully understood our
topic yesterday

B. EXPLORE
1. Motivation
Class do you like puzzles? Yes Ma’am/sir!

Good! Now, I will divide you into 4

groups. And you will choose your team
name it’s either TEAM FILTER,
SETTLE, STRAIN and PICK. After you
decide what team name you choose, I
am going to distribute broken puzzle.
What you are going to do is to arrange
the puzzle as fast as you can, once
you are done paste in the boards and
state what is it all about

Is the direction clear? Yes Ma’am/sir!

Okay I will divide you into 4 groups

(the teacher divides the group into 4)
Now who will be the TEAM FILTER? Ma’am/sir we, the group 1 will be the team
filter.

Okay group 1 will be the team filter.

Now who will be the TEAM SETTLE? Ma’am/sir we, the group 2 will be the team
settle.

Okay group 2 will be the team settle.

The TEAM STRAIN who will it be? Ma’am/sir we, the group 3 will be the team
Strain.

And group 4 will be the TEAM PICK

Yes, Ma’am/sir.

Okay let’s start

(the pupils will
do the activity)

Great Job Class! Give yourself a

Victory clap. The way to do it is clap
3x, raise a thumbs up and say
VICTORY!!

Everybody let’s do the Victory clap (The pupils will execute the victory clap)
1. Presentation
Today we will find out if mixtures
can be separated.

2. Pre-Activity
Class, I have here different kinds
of mixture. What you are going to
do is to identify each substance
that makes up the mixture?

Is that clear?
Yes Ma’am/sir.

Now, who can identify the first

mixture? What are the substances that
are present in this mixture? Ma’am/sir, the first substances being mixed
are water and Atsuete seeds.

Good! How about the second mixture?

Who would like to come in front and The second substance being mixed
tell us the mixture? Ma’am/sir, are pebbles and sand.

Good! How about the third mixture? Ma’am/sir, the third substance that being
mixed are
Coins and beans.

Right! And the fourth mixture? The fourth substance that being mixed
Ma’am/sir, are water and rice grains.

Very good! Okay class listen, is it

possible for us to separate these
mixtures? Yes, Ma’am/sir!

That’s Correct! We can separate these

mixtures by using different ways and
that is what we are going to do today.
From your team earlier choose who
will be the leader, scribe, timekeeper,
resource investigator, facilitator and
sharer of your group. What you are
going to do is to identify each
substance that are being mixed and
you’re going to identify the different
ways or method you used in
separating those mixtures.
Yes, Ma’am/sir!
Is the direction clear?

May I remind you of your roles.

Leader- makes sure that the group
achieves the task
Scribe- makes sure the group records
what is needed
Timekeeper- makes sure the group
keeps the time
Resource investigator- makes sure
the group has the equipment it
needs
Facilitator- makes sure that
everybody in the group has an equal
chance to contribute.
Sharer- makes sure the group
communicates and share ideas with
other group?

Class, before we proceed, what are

the standards to be observed during group
activity?

 Ma’am/sir, share your ideas

Good! What else? and follow the steps in
performing activities.

That’s Right! Another one,  Cooperate with the group

Ma’am/sir!

Correct!  Ma’am/sir, work quietly and

perform the activity with
caution!
(The teacher will add some Safety
Tips for the Group Activity)

3. Activity Proper
I will give you a task card and then
you’re going to identify the
component of mixture and write the
techniques / ways in separating
mixture. Each group will be given 10
minutes to finish their task and they
will present their output in front

 Group 1. Separating
component of mixtures using
filtration Method

 Group 2. Separating (Each Group will perform the activity

component of mixtures using given by their teacher and after 10
decantation Method minutes they will present their output
in front.)
 Group 3. Separating
component of mixtures using
Sieving Method

 Group 3. Separating
component of mixtures using
Manual separation Method

(please see attached worksheet)

C. EXPLAIN
1. Group Reporting
I’m glad that everyone participated in
the activity. Now may I ask the
presenter of the group and explain
their observation.

Group 1, what is your observation in The mixture is Atsuete seeds and water. The
the activity? method to use in separating this mixture is
the method of Filtration.

Very good! How about group 2? The mixture is rice grain and water. The
method to use in separating this mixture is
the method of Decantation.

The mixture is pebbles and sand. The

method to use in separating this mixture is
Very good! How about group 3? the method of Sieving.
The mixture is beans and coins. The method
to use in separating this mixture is Manual
Excellent! And the last group, the Separation.
group 4?

(the students will execute the victory clap)

Very good. Now let’s to the victory

clap again

2. Discussions Mixtures can be separated through different

ways or methods.
You all did a good job in performing
the activity. Now, From the activities
we did. What can you say about it?

(the students will raise their hand)

Great, now do you have any idea what Ma’am/sir, our topic for today will be the
will be our topic for today? Please ways of separating mixtures.
raise your hand.

Correct, The things you’ve performed

earlier in our group activity are the
Different Ways or Method in
Separating Mixture. Filtration,
Decantation, Sieving and Manual
separation. The method to use
depends on the type of mixture and
the substances combine. For example:

In separating Atsuete seeds and water No sir,

does manual separation will help in
separating the mixture?

Right, so what method are we going (the students raise their hand)
to use to separate the mixture of sand
and water? Sir, in separating Atsuete seed and water we
Who wants to answer? have to use the filtration method.

Very good! In order to separate sand

and water we are going to use
Filtration method.

Filtration is a process used to

separate an insoluble solid or a solid
that cannot be dissolved from a
liquid. The solid remains to the filter
paper or a cloth while the liquid
passes through.

While doing the activity earlier, in Yes sir!

doing the filtration method. Does the
Atsuete seed left on the cloth?

Sir, because Atsuete seed is insoluble

What do you think is the reason why
the Atsuete seed left on the cloth?

That’s right. The Atsuete seed is

unable to pass through our filter
because it is insoluble and the Atsuete
seed left on the cloth is called a
Residue.
Yes sir!
What about the water? Does it pass
through the cloth?

Sir, because water is considered a liquid.

What do you think is the reason why
the water passed through our filter or
the cloth?

Very good! The water passed our filter

cloth because it is a liquid and once it
passed though the filter cloth it is
called
a Filtrate.

(the student raises a hand)

Sir, Filtration is a process used to separate
Now what is a filtration again? Raise an insoluble solid from a liquid.
your hand if you want to answer.

 Ma’am/Sir when coffee powder and

water using a filter cloth to produce
Can you give me an example of coffee drink
mixtures where we can use Filtration?

 Ma’am/sir when separating tea

powder and water using filter cloth to
Great any other examples? produce tea drink.
Ma’am/sir we can use the Decantation
Very good! What about the rice grains method.
and the water what method are we
going to use to separate this mixture?

Very good! Decantation is a

separation method where solids are
allowed to settle below the liquid at the
bottom of the mixture. Like this one
on the picture

What do you think is the reason why  Ma’am sir, because the might not get
we should wait the solid to settle first separated properly.
before separating the liquid? Anyone?

Correct!  Ma’am/Sir, the solid component will

not get separated.
Any other answers?

That’s is correct.

Class, did you know that in cooking,

decantation is also done? Just like  Ma’am/sir when separating
separating rice grain and water? Can beans and water.
you give me an example of mixture
where decantation can be used in
 Ma’am/sir when separating
separating.? rocks and water.

 Ma’am/sir when separating

tea leaves in the water.

Very good. All of your answers are

correct.
Ma’am/Sir, Decantation is a separation
method where solids are allowed to settle
below the liquid at the bottom of the
mixture.
So, what is Decantation again?

No Ma’am/sir.

We also have here the pebbles and

sand. Does filtration will help in
separating pebbles and sand?
No Ma’am/sir.

How about Decantation?

That is correct. Either one of those Ma’am/sir, we have to use sieving or

method won’t help in separating sand straining method.
and pebble. So what do we have to do
basing from what we have done
earlier?

That’s right. Sieving is a method of

mechanical separation of materials in
a mixture and it uses device with
small holes or also called as sieve to
separate materials that are of different
sizes.

Class look at these pictures.

.

 Ma’am sir, in the kitchen

Do you know where we can find these?  Ma’am sir, in the construction sites.

 Ma’am/sir when separating sugar.

Because sugar might contain larger
Can you give an example of mixtures bits. We can use sieving to get only
where we can use sieving? the fine sugar.

 Ma’am/sir, the same also with flour.

We use sieving to separate larger bits
Good! Any other answers? that is mixed in fine flour.

 Ma’am/sir we use sieving to separate

larger bits of sugar from fine sugar in
Right, so Sieve is a device use to baking.
separate materials that are in
different sizes.

For the beans and coins. Does

filtration will help in separating this
mixture? No Ma’am/Sir!

How about decantation?

No Ma’am/Sir!
How about we use a strainer for
sieving? No Ma’am/Sir!

Now who wants to answer what

method are we going to use in (the student raises a hand)
separating beans and coins? Ma’am/sir, the method that are we going to
use to separate coins and beans mixture is
the Manual separation.

Is there any tool we can use for

manual separation? None Ma’am/sir the only thing we can use to
separate is our hands
Very good! Manual separation is a
method where we can use our hand in
separating mixtures. When particles
are big enough or can be seen clearly.
For example the beans and coins you
can easily separate them using your
hand.  Ma’am/sir toy cars and dolls

Can you give me an example?  Ma’am/sir pebbles that has different

colors or sizes.

Very good what else?

yes that’s correct

Sir/ma’am the different ways in separating

D. ELABORATE mixtures are Filtration, Sieving, Decantation
1. Generalization and Manual Separation
Again Class Let’s have a Recap.
What are the different ways in
separating
Mixture? Filtration is commonly the mechanical or
physical operation which is used for the
separation of solid from liquid

That’s Good! What is the meaning of

Filtration Method?  Sand and Water ma’am/sir
Well done! Can you give an example
of Separating mixtures using Filtration Sieving method is used to separate a dry
method? mixture with different sizes while
decantation is used in separating a liquid and
solid by letting the solid to settle first and

differentiate Sieving method
Decantation method?

 Beans and water Ma’am/sir

Very Good! Will you give an example

of separating mixtures using
Decantation method  Ma’am/sir pebbles and sand

How about an example of sieving

method? Manual separation in this method we can use
our hand by separating mixtures.

Right! Now class, What is the meaning

of Manual Separation?  Ma’am/sir, different sizes and colors
of pebbles

That’s Right! Will you give an example

of Manual Separation? None, ma’am/sir

That’s! Right!

Is there any question Yes ma’am/sir

Regarding our topic class?
