LESSON PLAN – PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Topic : POLARITY OF A MOLECULE BASED ON ITS ELECTRONEGATIVITY STRUCTURE

Content Standard:
The learners demonstrate the understanding of how the uses of different materials are related to their properties
and structures (electronegativity).
Performance Standard:
The learners should be able to draw/illustrate the structure of a compound/molecule based on its electronegativity
and by identifying a molecule as ionic, nonpolar covalent and polar covalent bond respectively.
Curriculum Guide Code: S11/12PS-IIIc-15
Learning Competencies:
1. Define an atom, molecule, polarity and electronegativity and their importance on making a bond.

Molecule Smallest particle of _____1______.
______2______ Smallest particle of chemical element.
______3______ The ability of an atom to _____4_____
electrons in a chemical bond.

6. AlBr3

Pre-Activity

Review/ Motivation:
 The shampoos, body soaps, detergent powder including water were considered
unique compounds/molecules we have today. How do you tell the bond present in
these compounds?
 Define the following words: atom, molecule, polarity and electronegativity.
Presentation:
The teacher presents the learning competencies for the day to the students.

Activity
Illustrate the electronegativity structure of a molecule; tell their difference and the type of
bond they portray by accomplishing worksheet number 2.
Analyses
1. What composed a molecule?
2. In what ways, electronegativity considered significant?
3. When illustrating electronegativity structure of a compound/molecule, what is the
manner of illustrating it?
4. What does the tail and the arrow head of the structure (molecule) imply?
5. When do we say that a molecule is positive, negative or neutral?
6. When do we say that a molecule is ionic bond, polar covalent bond, and/or
nonpolar covalent bond?
Abstraction
1. What is an atom? A molecule?
2. What are the steps in identifying that a molecule is ionic, polar covalent, and/or
nonpolar covalent bond?

Application
There is plenty of importance of the different natural and artificial compounds we used as
of today. Cite 2 examples of a compound (natural or artificial) that best help you in daily
living and support your answer.

Assignment/Enrichment:

Filling-in the answers of worksheet no. 2 (if not finished on time inside the classroom).
