Let's start our lesson today with a short recap of our
last lesson.

What is an atom? Atom is a fundamental unit of a matter.

How do Atomic number differentiate with Mass

Atomic number refers to the number of protons found in

mass number refers to the number of protons and
neutrons in the nucleus of an atom

4. Presenting examples/instances for the new lesson

Today, we will discuss the Polarity of Molecules.

But before we continue, please read our objectives.
At the end of this session, learners are expected to:
1. define the polarity of molecules and
electronegativity;
2. find the electronegativity of elements in the
periodic table of elements; and
3. realize the importance polarity of molecules in

Our topic today will focus on the Polarity of

Molecules, and how it differs from non-polar and
we will also discuss about the type of bonding as
well as the electronegativity.

But before our discussion, let’s try to identify the

key terms referred to in each statement.
Direction: Answer the following question, and
choose the answer in your box. Answer
1. Non-Polar Bond

______4. It is a result of the uneven distribution
of charges of atoms in a molecule.
______5. It is the ability of an atom in a molecule
to attract electrons.

5. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

Let’s analyze this picture.

Picture A Picture B

What is the game shown in the pictures? Tug of war

Yes Sir.
Have you ever tried this game?

In picture A, the horse and the girl are pulling toward

What have you observed in the picture? them. It shows that the boy is equally shared with the
horse and princess. In the concept of covalent bonding, it
would be classified as non-polar since electrons are
evenly shared. However, picture B, clearly shows the
unbalanced person on each side. If we relate this to
bonding, they don’t share equally. So, this bond is polar.
1. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

To further in, let’s have a group activity!

Activity: Mekus Mekus!
Materials

 Water
 Oil
 Dishwashing liquid
 10 disposable cups
Procedure
1. Obtain 2 disposable cups for each group and
prepare the following.
Set-up 1: Water + Oil
Set up 2: Detergent + Oil

2. Thoroughly stir each mixture and observe.

Set up Solubility Polarity

Set up Solubility Polarity
(soluble or (Polar or non- (soluble or (Polar or non-
insoluble) polar) insoluble) polar)

Set up 1 Set up 1 insoluble Non-polar

Set up 2 Set up 2 soluble Polar

Guide Question: Guide Question

1. Which of the following setups mixed well?
1. The setup that mixes is setup 2 while setup 1 is not.
Which did not?
2. What can you infer from the result of this 2. Based on my observation, polar substances do not mix
activity? with non-polar substances. For instance, water is polar
while oil is not. On the other side, dishwashing liquid is
partly polar and partly non-polar therefore it can mix
with water and oil.

Excellent, we will now discuss the Polarity of

Molecules.

2. Developing mastery

What is a molecule? A molecule refers to a group of two or more atoms held

together by chemical bonds. Examples of this are water,
salt, and nitrogen.

What do we mean by polarity? Polarity refers to the distribution of electric charge

around atoms, chemical groups, or molecules.

How can we determine if it is polar or non-polar? All compounds can be classified based on what type of
chemical bond is formed when the atoms are combined.
It can be used to determine whether a molecule is polar
or non-polar.

The two classifications of compounds are covalent and

ionic. A covalent compound is a molecule formed by
covalent bonds, in which atoms share one or more pairs
of valence electrons. On the other hand, Ionic compounds
are made up of ions rather than molecules. Instead of
sharing electrons in covalent bonds, ionic compound
atoms transfer from one atom to another to form an ionic
bond that relies on electrostatic attraction to keep the
atoms together. Polarity is a result of uneven distribution
of charges of atoms in a molecule

If a molecule is non-polar, it is symmetric. For instance,

methane has a chemical formula of (CH4).
However, if it is polar, it is asymmetric. Polar means the
distribution of electrons in a covalent bond is not equal.
It also contains lone pairs of electrons on the central
atom or atom is bonded with different electronegativity
values.

What is Electronegativity and how can we

determine if it is polar or non-polar using it?

Electronegativity is a measure of the relative tendency of

an atom to attract electrons to itself when chemically
combined with other atoms. This concept explains that
the higher the value of electronegativity, the more it
tends to attract electrons toward itself.

Electronegativity Difference

Examples
Molecule EN ED Type of

O2 O=3.5 0 Non-Polar
O=3.5
HCl H=2.1 0.9 Polar
Cl= 3.0
CaCl Ca=1.0 2.0 Ionic
Cl=3.0
3. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

Do you have any clarifications? None Sir

Let's see if you learned something in our

discussion. Answer
Activity. Determine the type of bond that exists Molecule EN ED Type of
between the paired elements. Use the periodic table Bond
of elements to determine their electronegativity. H and H H=2.1 0 Non-Polar
H=2.1
1. H and H H and F H=2.1 1.9 Ionic
2. H and F F=4.0
3. Mg and O Mg and O Mg=1.2 2.3 Ionic
4. Cl and Cl O= 3.5
5. S and O Cl and Cl Cl=3 0 Non-polar
Cl=3
S and O S=2.5 1 Polar
O=3.5

What do you think of the implications of the It helps us to determine which molecules dissolve in
polarity of molecules in our daily lives? water. For instance, if we are using salt if we are cooking.
Salt dissolves in water because they are both polar. Also,
if we are cleaning oil in our plates, we use dishwashing
liquid to clean it.

What a great answer. Thank You.
