EXERCISE 21

SPECIALIZED LEAVES

OBJECTIVE
To distinguish the different types of specialized leaves

SPECIMENS
Kataka-taka (kalanchoe), Dona Aurora or bougainvillea, cactus, century plant, aloe vera, onion,
digman, begonia, rose, suha, oak leaf bracket fern, pitcher plant, walking fern, water hyacinth, and
cadena de amor.

PROCEDURE
Examine all the leaves that you have. Note the different specializations and determine their
corresponding functions.

RESULTS
Draw the portion where the specialized structure is located and indicate on the space below each
drawing the specialized function.

QUESTIONS
1. What leaf specializations are associated with dry areas? Climbing? Reproduction and storage?

2. Since tendrils and spines can either be modified leaves or modified stems, how would you
determine the origin of a given specimen?
