Social media is a term that refers to several web-based applications in which

users interact with one another. Interactivity is what distinguishes social networking sites
from traditional (or “static”) websites. According to National Academies Press (2012),
social media applications encourage users in sharing their experiences, opinions,
knowledge, and sometimes their locations.
You can use social media to: Communicate and keep up with family and friends
all over the world. Make new friends and join new communities; connect with those that
have common interests or goals. Participate in or support worthy causes, and raise
concern of critical issues.
The earliest methods of communicating across great distances used written
correspondence delivered by hand from one person to another (Hendricks. 2013. Small
Business Trends). It has also stated that Technology began to change very rapidly in
the 20th Century. The first recognizable social media site, Six Degrees, was created in
1997. It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999,
the first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation that is still
popular today.
The earliest forms of the Internet, such as CompuServe, were developed in the
1960s. Primitive forms of email were also developed during this time. By 2006,
Facebook and Twitter both became available to users throughout the world. These sites
remain some of the most popular social networks on the Internet (Hendricks. 2013.
