practices, customs and traditions in your city/municipality or community.

a. Sab-ong or notably known as pamamanhikan in Filipino is an old practice performed in marriage,

wherein both families of the couple, who formally agree to be married, come to a meeting before the
wedding. Due to its valuable purpose, the sab-ong serves as a preparation for the couple to start their
married life. What can be provided is not limited to a hectare of land, enough money to buy some land,
domestic animals (e.g. cow, goat, pig, etc.), accessories, etc. A dowry was traditionally anticipated, but in
recent times, a ring has taken its place.

b. Panag-atang is a well-known tradition among Ilocanos, serving as an offering to the deceased and to
drive away evil spirits. Food is commonly the offering given, either suman, patupat, sinukat, diket, etc.

c. Election is when each barangay is headed by a barangay captain and barangay assembly, each elected
by the citizens of the barangay. As the basic political unit, the Barangay serves as the primary planning
and implementing unit of government policies, plans, programs, projects, and activities in the
community, and as a forum wherein the collective views of the people may be expressed and
considered.

d. Padaya is one of the most common traditional practices among Ilocano communities. A custom that
involves a social gathering of family members, relatives, and guests at the owner’s home to connect and
celebrate. Known for its cultural significance, Padaya is a reflection of the Ilocanos’ rich heritage in
delicacies and the norm of the people to connect and help each other toward relief or solace.

planting of the crops and the start of the harvest season. Every family within the neighborhood will
