1 Is it visually attractive and motivating? + The book is almost full

of pictures. The
designers decorated
the book with
pictures. Almost every
page has at least one
picture in it. The
pictures in the book
are all different. The
book is very rich in
terms of picture
diversity. The book
can take the attention
of the students and
might motivate them
because all the
pictures are positive.
Positive means
pictures contain
smiling faces, foods
and different types of
building.
2 Is there a variety of beautiful, colourful, and real + There is. As I
pictures? mentioned above,
there is a rich variety
in pictures. Turn the
pages and face
different types of
pictures related to
each topic. Most of
the pictures are
related to our lives. A
picture shows that
people are playing
instruments, cooking
food, playing a game,
doing a sport or taking
pictures. All of them
are colorful and
beautiful.
3 Is the printing quality good? (material, size and + I would say it is
type of fonts) because when you
touch the book or its
pages you can feel the
quality. You can feel
that it is not a cheap
material that they
used in the book
because when you
touch the pages it is so
smooth. There is a
good thing that I liked
about the book is that
important sentences,
objectives, goals or
the instructions are
written in bold italic
form so that students
can realize the
differences.
4 Is the content given appropriately? + It is. All the content
are given in the first
pages. It shows what
is the content on
which page. The
content page is
separated into a few
parts. It also shows
what the contents are
and what they include
such as grammar,
listening or other
skills. It does not give
%100 detailed
information but
overall it is
appropriate.
5 Are there clear goals and objectives? + Unfortunately, there is
no goals or objectives
written in the book. I
checked every page
but could not see any
goal or objective.
6 Does the book focus on meaning or form? The book is mostly
focused on the form.
Every topic has one
grammatical points to
teach. It is clear to see
that the book focused
on the grammar
because the more I
check it the more I
realize the grammar
points that almost
every page has in a
way.
7 Is there rich, varied and comprehensible input? + Well, the inputs are
designed according to
the topics and it
seems it is rich in
terms of pictures. For
example, one of the
topics is about
welcome to my city
and the pictures are
taken from different
location of a city such
as museum, stadium
etc… Overall, I may
say that the inputs are
rich, varied and
comprehensible.
8 Is communicative language use targeted? + In every topic there is
a speaking part that
contains both
grammar and the
context but most of
the time this part is
skipped I believe. Also,
some activities
encourage students to
talk each other as
well. Overall, most of
the activities designed
to use the language to
communicate one to
another.
9 Are real-life communication processes + Yes they are. Most of
included? the activities are
related to our lives.
For example, one of
the activities is about
going to a cinema and
teach students how to
communicate and
how to reply the
questions. They are
many activities that
real-life
communication
included. Also, it also
gives opportunity to
teaches to let students
to talk about the real
life according to topic.
The activities allow
students to talk to
each other so that
they can
communicate.
10 Does it attempt to include authentic texts in + It does. The book
order to give students firsthand experience of includes many
everyday life? authentic texts. For
example, there is a
topic about a concert,
a festival, an event or
about a plane. The
publishers designed
the book according to
the real life so that
students can have an
experience before that
face it.
11 Does the book encourage pair work, group work + The book only
and information sharing? encourages pair work
and information
sharing. There isn’t
any group work. I
mean even if there is
two people working it
is a group but most of
the time the book says
work in pairs and
share information.
12 Does the book promote learner decision- + Not a lot. There are
making, guessing, discovering and taking risks? only a few activities in
the book that students
have chance to
practice the skills in
the questions you
asked. There are not
even appropriate rules
about those. It
sometimes promotes
deciding making or
guessing. For example,
one of the activities
say read and decide
which car is better and
why? Give reasons.
13 Does the book aim at improving problem- + It sometimes aims at
solving, creative and critical thinking skills? being creative. One of
the activities
encourage students to
create a plan about
your room and explain
the things are and
why. There are only a
few activities that
encourage these skills
but not a lot.
14 Is there any basis for the selection of + There is. At the end of
vocabulary? the book, it the most
used or the necessary
vocabulary of each
unite. Also, there is a
separated page for the
irregular verbs.
15 Is there a clear list of vocabulary items? + As I mentioned above,
there is a selection of
necessary vocabulary
of each unite but it is
not clear. It only says
the name of the unite,
page, topic name and
vocabulary that
related to the topic.
That’s all. There is not
any classification such
as idioms etc…
16 Are there exercises meant for practicing Not a lot. There are
vocabulary items? some fill in the blanks
activities where
students only can use
the given vocabulary.
17 Is the vocabulary recycled and extended in the + There is. I have
consolidation lesson and workbook? realized that some
vocabulary used a lot
in the book. For
example, family
brother, parents or
more vocabulary used
over and over again.
Also, every unite has
different vocabulary
so in the book, a
group of vocabulary
used in the first unite
and in the fifth unite.
Then, a group of
vocabulary used in the
second unite and sixth
unite. That how it
works in the book I
evaluate.
18 Is teaching pronunciation included? + Yes, it is. In every book
there is a
pronunciation activity.
In one activity, it says
‘’ say these words with
the correct stress. In a
different activity it
says ‘’ Listen and
repeat the words with
the ‘’i:’’ sound. Even
though these might
seem as a same
activity, the purpose is
teaching
pronunciation in
different ways.
19 Is the book structure based? + Yes, it is. It is structure
based. Every unite has
more than one
grammatical structure
to teach. Almost every
activity designed
according to the
grammatical
structured. It does
not explicitly show but
in the first unite it is
focused on present
simple and in the
second unite it is
focused on the
present continuous.
20 Are the functions of the structures clearly stated + They are not clearly
and properly practiced? stated and properly
practiced all the time.
One of the structure
points was this, that,
these and those. The
book does not explain
it how to use it and
where to use it but it
shows in a different
way. The book
explained those with
pictures. There is a
teacher and she holds
some keys and asks
what are these and
follow up questions
related to topic. Also,
there isn’t enough
practice for the topic.
There was only one
activity and that was
all. They are many
examples like this in
the book.
21 Are the structures recycled? + Yes, they are. For
example, in the first
unite it teaches
Present Simple Tense
and it also teaches the
same tense in the
coming unites.
22 Is skill development considered? + Yes, it is. All the skills
are included in the
book and every
chapter has at least
one activity for each
skill.
23 Is there a balance between listening, speaking, + There is. All the skills
reading, and writing skills? are balanced. When I
opened the first page
and it showed how
the skills are settled in
the book and they are
well balanced.
24 Does the book promote inferential and + I would not say It
interpretive skills? does. Maybe,
sometimes it asks
students opinion and
asks them to give a
comment about the
topic or about
something but not a
lot. There is only a
few.
25 Are there varied activities with different task + There are. Since not all
difficulty? the students are at the
same level, some tasks
seem more difficult
than others and some
activities seem much
easier when you
compare them so it
shows there is a good
balance in difficulties
of the activities which
encourages all
students.
26 Are learner differences observed in tasks and + They are but it is in
activities? way limited. For
example, there was
one activity and it was
about watching a
movie and do an
exercise about it. This
might help those who
are visual learners but
there was not any
exercise for
kinaesthetic or social
learners so the book
could not include all
the learner
differences.
27 Are the activities well sequenced? + Yes, they are. The
book starts from easy
to difficult ones but it
repeats itself. For
example, the first
activity in the book is
work with words and
you put the words in
correct place
according to the
pictures and you can
see the same in
activity in other unites
as well. The book has
a nice variety in
activities but it repeats
itself.
28 Is there a supplementary work book or other + Yes, there is. The book
materials? has one work book.
Apart from that, there
is a CD as well but it is
the digital form of the
book.
28 Are there useful and explicit teacher’s notes? + I could not observe
that. The teacher has
one teacher’s book
but still all the
teachers do the
follows the same path.
30 Are materials provided for testing and + They prepare the
evaluation testing and evaluation
materials by
themselves hocam.
Even though materials
are somehow
provided, they prefer
to use their
techniques when
prepare a test.
31 Is it fun to use this book? + It is. The book gives
positive energy to the
learners because
when you open it
there are a few
activities like games so
it is fun to us it even
though those activities
are limited.
32 Is it sensitive to sociocultural variation? + Yes, it is. When you
open the book and
turn the pages, it is
very clear to see that
they are many topics,
pictures and subtitles
about different
cultures such as New
Zealand, Asia, America
and Russia. They are
many more then these
countries.
33 Is it appropriate for learners’ culture and + It is actually. It does
values? not include anything
that is not appropriate
for the learners’
culture and values.
There is not any
offensive topic in the
book.
