PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY by SIGMUND FREUD

Three Levels of consciousness:

CONSCIOUS - what we’re thinking about or experiencing at any given moment.

PRECONSCIOUS - what we can readily call to consciousness such as knowledge or
memories.
UNCONSCIOUS - thoughts, desires, and impulses of which we’re not aware of.

Psychoanalysis is commonly used to treat depression and anxiety disorders.

In psychoanalysis (therapy) Freud would have a patient lie on a couch to relax, and
he would sit behind them taking notes while they told him about their dreams and
childhood memories.

The id is the personality component made up of unconscious psychic energy that

works to satisfy basic urges, needs, and desires.

The superego is the ethical component of the personality and provides the moral
standards by which the ego operates. The superego's criticisms, prohibitions, and
inhibitions form a person's conscience, and its positive aspirations and ideals
represent one's idealized self-image, or “ego ideal.”

Your ego is your conscious mind, the part of your identity that you consider your
"self." If you say someone has "a big ego," then you are saying he is too full of
himself.

There are seven different Ego States, and six of those ego states are unhealthy.

● Selfish
● Pleaser
● Rebellious
● Manipulator
● Critical
● Enabling

ID - Instincts
EGO - Reality
SUPEREGO - Morality
