Streep
Marlee Matlin is an actress, author, and activist who made a significant contribution to the
entertainment industry and the deaf community. As the first deaf actress to win an Academy
Award for her role in children of Lesser God, Matlin has paved the way for other deaf actors
and has shown that disability does not have to limit one’s ability. In researching Matlin, I was
captive by her resilience and determination despite being deaf from a young age she never let
her disability define her or hold her back. Matlin’s activism and advocacy work are also
noteworthy. She used her platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the deaf
community and to advocate for greater accessibility with inclusivity. Matlin has shown that
disability does not have to be a limitation and that everyone has something valuable to offer.
