Guidance for Phonics Program

• Starting date: Monday, 29th October, 2018


• Timing: Everyday, Second period (8:00 – 8:45). Please follow the new schedules.
• Location: Grade One in classrooms. Grade Two locations and students’ lists are
attached in the excel sheet.

• Please use the Phonics Program Attendance Record daily.


• Each student should have a separate Phonics File to keep his Floppy Phonics
Activity
Book. Secure groups should be using it to keep their reading log and ORT books.
• Please keep a tray in class clearly labelled with the phonics teacher’s name on it and
allocate your student’s phonics file according to his phonics group/tray.
• Lesson plans are found in Google Drive (RWI)
• Each teacher must have a phonics folder. All completed tests need to be signed and
dated by the person who carried out the assessment and stored in the folders for
evidence. All Screening Checks need to be kept in the folders and results entered on
the Phonics Screening Check excel file in the shared area (Mrs Rubina’s file).

• Important notes for Grade One


 All Grade One students will be taught in homeroom classes for four weeks (with the
exception of secure pupils, currently only 4 students).
 Grade One secure students will join Grade Two Secure groups (depending on their
literacy pro results)
 Start from Stage +1 lesson plan.
 Teach one sound a day.
 On Thursday, teachers will consolidate phonics sounds taught throughout the week
(Review the sound, blending with Fred, write the letter/words).
 All lessons need to follow the structure in the lesson plans and delivered as modelled
in the Phonics videos ‘Say the Sounds’ on Google Drive. (previously modelled by Mrs.
Rubina in the first phonics workshop).
 After the 4 weeks, students will be reassessed by homeroom teacher using the Stage
+1 Assessment Sheets. Then, students will be regrouped according to their scores.
Teachers will be given a week to complete the assessments starting from Sunday, 25 th
November, 2018.

• Important Notes for Grade Two


 Secure groups will be split according to their results in the literacy pro test. Their
reading Lexile will need to be mapped to the ORT level. Please refer to the correlation
chart for Lexile to ORT). They will start the guided reading sessions – as explained by Ms
Rubina.
 All Phonics groups will start from Stage +1 lesson plan (Early Phonics, Developing,
Emerging). Teach two sounds a day. On Thursday, teachers will consolidate phonics
sounds taught throughout the week (Review the sound, blending with Fred, write the
letter/words).

• Home Readers (Oxford Reading Tree):


 Homeroom Teachers (not phonics teacher) need to allocate ORT books and keep a
running record of student’s books (a sample is attached with this file)
 Secure groups – The secure group teacher needs to assign books from the Scholastic
Pro library. Initially 1 book a week. The quiz will be done in school after three weeks 2
books will be assigned and pupils will do the quiz at home. Children will be encouraged
to read additional books if they wish within their range. The ORT books will be used
during the Guided Reading sessions and are not to be taken home.
 The homeroom teachers and phonics teacher need to be in constant communication
about the pupil progress.

 Please refer to the excel sheet (attached to this file) to find your students’ ORT stage.
 Students in Early Phonics level will start on Stage 1.
 Students in Developing level will start on Stage 2.
 Students in Emerging level will start on Stage 3.
 Students in Secure group will be assigned books from literacy pro by the secure
group teacher.

The Read at Home Program (for One and Two) works as follows:
 Early Phonics, Developing and Emerging groups only - Your students will be taking
home a new reader once a week; every Thursday. The reader should be kept in your
student’s English folder and must be returned to class the next day. Secure group will
be assigned a book on Literacy Pro – they do not take an ORT book home.
 Please encourage your students to read and record the book review in their reading
log every Thursday.
 The teacher will read with each child in class and ask questions about the story.
 If your student was unable to read the story fluently or show understanding by
answering questions, please return the same story home. Parents should be informed
that their child needs more practice reading the story.
 We are focusing on reading fluency and reading for meaning.
