TYPES OF VOLCANO

STROMBOLIAN
DO YOU KNOW?
An erupting volcano can trigger tsunamis,

flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows and

rockfalls. More than 80% of the earth's

surface is volcanic in origin. The sea floor

and some mountains were formed by countless

volcanic eruptions. Gaseous emissions from

volcano formed the earth's atmosphere.

MOUNT PINATUBO
Mount Pinatubo is an active volcano located

on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, at

the intersection of the borders of the

provinces of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga.

Before 1991, the mountain was inconspicuous

and heavily eroded. It was covered in dense

forest which supported a population of several

thousand indigenous people, the Aeta, who

had fled to the mountains from the lowlands

when the Spanish conquered the Philippines

in 1565.
PHREATIC
Eruptions that are driven by steam explosions

due to the superheating of groundwater by a

magmatic source. Phreatic eruptions may

include volcanic ash made of shattered rock

material, but incorporate no magmatic (e.g.,

juvenile) material.

TAAL VOLCANO
Taal, located in the Philippines, is

part of a caldera system in southern

Luzon Island. Recorded eruptions date

back to 3,580 BCE. The caldera is 15

x 20 km and contains Lake Taal, which

has a depth of 160 m, and an island

that also contains a lake within the

Main Crater.
PHREATOMAGMATIC
An eruption that involves both

magma and water, which typically

interact explosively, leading to

concurrent ejection of steam and

pyroclastic fragments
MOUNT MAYON
Mayon, located in the Philippines, is a

highly active stratovolcano with recorded

historical eruptions dating back to 1616.

The most recent eruptive episode began

in early January 2018 that consisted of

phreatic explosions, steam-and-ash

plumes, lava fountaining, and pyroclastic

flow
STROMBOLIAN
Strombolian eruptions are moderately

explosive eruptions of basaltic magma

with moderate gas content. Strombolian

eruptions consist of intermittent,

discrete explosive bursts which eject

pyroclasts as high as hundreds of feet

into the air in firework-like

incandescent rooster-tails.
TRIDENT VOLCANO
Trident Volcano, one of several

'extinct' volcanoes in Katmai

National Monument, erupted on

February 15, 1953. Observers in a

U. S. Navy plane, 50 miles away,

and in King Salmon, 75 miles away,

reported an initial column of smoke

that rose to an estimated 30, 000

feet.
VULCANIAN
Vulcanian eruptions usually consist of

small volumes of magma, but form

vigorous eruption columns made up of

highly fragmented ash. These eruption

columns may be dark in color and rise

to moderate heights. Large blocks and

bombs, including breadcrust bombs,

may be ejected during the eruption.

MOUNT VESUVIUS
Mount Vesuvius, on the west coast

of Italy, is the only active volcano

on mainland Europe. It is best

known because of the eruption in

A.D. 79 that destroyed the cities

of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but

Vesuvius has erupted more than

50 times.
PLINIAN
Plinian eruptions are extremely

explosive eruptions, producing ash

columns that extend many tens of miles

into the stratosphere and that spread

out into an umbrella shape. These large

eruptions produce widespread deposits

of fallout ash. Eruption columns may

also collapse due to density to form

thick pyroclastic flows.
