School Stress
I Returning to school after the summer holidays is traditionally a reason for excitement. Students are
reunited with friends, and begin learning more challenging material. But does everyone really look forward
to starting a new school year?
II In a survey on teen mental health conducted jointly by the Irish Examiner and the organisation Reach-Out,
researchers discovered that school and exams were two primary sources of anxiety amongst teens. Out of
the 2,500 survey respondents, 80% felt pressure at school, and 81% selected exams as a cause of worry.
At the end of the survey, students were also given the opportunity to express their opinions. Many voiced
dissatisfaction with the school environment, saying that they had too much pressure put on them by
teachers. They also complained that with school and homework, leisure time wasn’t part of their
schedules. However, some psychologists differ with students regarding who is pushing students so hard.
According to research professor Dr Emer Smyth, much of the pressure is internal, and actually comes
from students’ high expectations of themselves.
III So, in this highly pressurised environment, how can teenagers protect their mental health? Susan
Stiffelman, a psychotherapist whose clients include stressed-out students, has several suggestions. Firstly,
indulging one’s biological needs, such as sleep, is a priority. Interestingly, she also advises students to
lower their goals. It goes against everything we’ve been taught, but setting slightly lower standards could
ensure better performance. What’s more, Dr Stiffelman instructs teens to make time for enjoyable creative
IV and sporting activities. These enable the brain to process information, which in fact facilitates studying.
However, as Dr Smyth observed, students’ rigorous study schedules are depriving them of the time
needed for these extra-curricular activities. And this isn’t likely to change without a serious discussion
about the consequences of an exam-focused education system, where teenagers believe that striving for
perfection is the only way to succeed.
