Before the Lesson Good morning class! How is everyone today? Good morning Ma’am!
A. Review previous lesson or
presenting the new lesson Before we check the attendance, organize the chairs,
and pick up the pieces of paper.

Let us pray.

Let me check the attendance. Who is absent from the

boys? From the girls? (student answers)

Last week, what was your lesson about? Our lesson last week was about bias and prejudice.

Now, what is bias? Bias is lacking a neutral viewpoint. A person is

considered biased when they lean towards a certain
direction, either in favor of or against it.
Under bias, there were three kinds that you
discussed. What were those three? Can someone
give at least one example? The three kinds of bias discussed were bias about
women, bias about religion, and bias towards a
political affiliation.

Very good. How about prejudice? What is prejudice? Prejudice is a preconceived judgment about a
person. It is an opinion formed beforehand.
B. Establishing a purpose for All right class. I have here images and what I want
the lesson you to do is to describe each picture.
What can you say about the women and men?
1. What does these images reveal about men
and women? Men are portrayed as strong and hard-working, while
women are portrayed as weak and can only do
domestic work.

2. Should women always be portrayed as doing

household chores and men doing hard No, because women cannot be confined to their
labour? homes. Women have more opportunity to work, even
in fields that are male-dominated.
C. Presenting Task #1 – Unbias Me
examples/instances of the new Now, I will show you a short video clip. But before
lesson that, keep in mind these questions while you watch
the video.

Guide questions:
a. What is the “label” attached to the woman in
the video?
b. Do you agree with what the woman said?
Why?
c. When you put a “label” on someone, are you
also being biased? Explain.
d. What comments do you hear from other
people about someone who is in the same
situation as the actress? How should you
react to them?

(teacher plays video clip of the shampoo

commercial)

Transcript of the TV commercial:

“Shame that there is still double standard. Sayang daw

ako, because I am a single mother. If a guy gets a girl
pregnant, he’s right and it’s natural. But if a girl gets
pregnant, malandi sya. When the news spread of my
pregnancy, people say, she’s on top of her game.
People make stories like she’s malandi or a woman of
the world. Was I unfairly judged? Yes! But then did it
stop me? No, but does it keep me stronger? Yes! Label
is a challenge I accepted. I want to show people that no
matter what happens to you, it should never stop you
from being successful. As an actress, I’ve never been
happiest. And being a single mom and parent give me
purpose. Sayang! I don’t think so! Can you whip it? I
did!”- Denise Laurel, shampoo TV commercial.

During the Lesson Discussion Proper:

D. Discussing new concepts and 1. Comprehension Check
practicing new skills #1
First, let us check your understanding of the
video.
a. What is the “label” attached to the woman in Malandi, flirt
the video?
Yes. It is a common occurrence in real life.
b. Do you agree with what the woman said?
Why?
Yes. Because we are casting a negative judgment
c. When you put a “label” on someone, are you on a person.
also being biased? Explain.
(varied answers)
d. What comments do you hear from other
people about someone who is in the same
situation as the actress? How should you
react to them? Bias and prejudice is very rampant in our society
that even celebrities or maybe even other

realize about bias and prejudice?

E. Discussing new concepts and Task #2 – Bias is Real!

practicing new skills #2 Read the following articles which depict biases and
prejudices. Be able to cite/identify lines from the text
that express bias or prejudice.
1. Culture change is what this country badly
needs. We want to get rid of corrupt
politicians, but we are not aware of the role we
play in breeding one. For instance, in our
neighborhood where one of the local officials
resides, our folks would always expect that the
local official would give financial help every
time one of the neighbors dies. When another
gets sick or gives birth, financial help is
immediately sought from that local official.
During weddings, baptism, birthdays, and all
sorts of celebration the same is expected from
him/her.
2. Considering that meager allowance is
received by local officials, it is not a wonder
where they get the “fund” they give to satisfy
the needs of their constituents. It is about time
that we be aware of the real job description of
our officials. Let us help them concentrate in
doing their job by not asking too much
financial help from them. We can do a lot in
helping our country. Let us begin with
ourselves.
3. I think that calling this summer hot would be an
incredible understatement. It has, in fact, been
quite unbearable with the heat driving everyone
indoors and some even collapsing (and a few
dying) from the sweltering and dizzying
temperatures. It truly comes as a welcome relief
for many that the rains have begun to quench
our parched population. As everyone knows,
water is the most important commodity in life.
Our own bodies are made of 80% water. We
can all live without so many things – electricity,
internet, and even food for a few days, but we
will not last without water.

F. Developing Mastery Differentiated instruction or Activities

Task 3 – Bias and Prejudice in Action

I will divide the class into three groups. Count of…

Group 1. Do a role play that depict racial

bias/prejudice. Make sure that everyone has a role to
play.

Group 2. Write a poem about bias or prejudice

Group 3. Draw a poster campaigning the acceptance of

our individual differences.

Here is the criteria where you will be graded on.

Criteria for rating:

Criteria Points
Performance 10
Content 5
Teamwork 5

We will draw lots to determine which group

the tasks will be assigned. I will give you 10
minutes to brainstorm and do your activities.
Write in a ½ sheet of paper the name of the
leader and members of the group and the
task you were assigned.
You may now start.

(Presentation of tasks. Provide feedback or

comments to the presentation)

G. Finding practical applications What other examples can you give that show bias
of concepts and skills in daily and prejudice in our everyday life?
living
What do you think is the value of being unbiased and
removing prejudices in our judgment? When we are unbiased we become kinder and more
understanding to one another.
Because we remove any prior judgment about a
person, we get to fully get to know a person.

After the Lesson If you are asked by your classmate who is absent Biases and prejudice are a common occurrence in
H. Making generalizations and what you learned about today, what will you say? society. It is generally due to insufficient knowledge,
abstractions about the lesson irrational feelings and closed-mindedness.
Removing this negative characteristic in a person lets
him/her develop their personality and appreciate the
diversity of each individual.
I. Evaluating learning Assessment:
Directions: Study each picture very carefully and find
out the message. Find out if these pictures show bias
and prejudice.

What is the message being conveyed in the picture that

interprets bias and prejudice?

J. Additional activities for Assignment:

application or remediation As an assignment, look for a short video clip about a
current societal issue faced by the country. Write
what you understood from the video.
