Being born a woman is my awful tragedy,
wrote Sylvia Plath in the summer of 1951.
She wanted to be free to express herself in
all the possible ways despite being a woman
and to walk freely at night. Compared to
1951, it seems that unsafe places have only
risen in number: women are under scrutiny
and danger not only in open fields and on the
streets but in their private places - home and
everywhere online too. We still don’t get to
decide and define the roles we want to play in
this game called life. They are given for us.
I was 5 when my mom told me that in some
countries a boy child is so much preferred
over a girl child that the girls might be given to
adoption. I was appalled! I loved being a girl.
I thought everyone wanted to be a girl - my
brothers loved to dress up in my skirts and
paint their nails. I was grateful I could do that
without being judged. But how could someone
not want to have a girl child? To me, it felt like
the greatest blessing, to be born a girl.
But too often than not, when a woman does
something different, bold, extraordinary, it’s
described as “despite being a woman”. This
narrative should be changed to ”because
she’s a woman”. We too maintain ourselves
in these golden cages. In Finland, it’s easy to
numb our minds and hide behind the facade
of our prime minister being a woman, having
granted women the right to vote first in the
world, stating: we are equal here! But we
are not. Finland is one of the most violent
countries in the EU for women. How can
anyone call us at the same time the happiest
country in the world? Is the suffering women
face insignificant? How seriously are we
taking the issues that women are facing?
