Long-winded Mary: What is Alakaupunki Festival,
where did the idea come from, and who’s involved?
Oona Heinänen: The idea for the festival actually
came almost five years ago from a small idea of
how amazing grassroot culture is in Helsinki and
the arts and cultural spaces that are not so well
known for the wider public (even these spaces
maybe don’t know each other exists). I felt like this
would be amazing to have all these spaces around
the city together in one map to tour around for one
weekend. Each would have a special program
open to the public to get to know the spaces - what
is their speciality, main interest, or point of view in
their actions. That’s the basic idea.
LWM: What are the places and what do they have
in common?
OH: We contacted forty different spaces in
the spring and over twenty were interested to
participate. What is common is that they are all
grassroot spaces and most are making it possible
for the public to participate, either as a volunteer,
or to bring their own program to the spaces, or
participate in any way. Each is creating the space
in more of a participatory way. They are also kind of
breathing organisms; they are not a couple people
deciding what’s happening, but they’re inviting
people to actually develop the space, are small,
and also fast to adapt to different changes, ideas,
and trying new stuff. So they are kind of courage
spaces also.
LWM: Did you say ‘courage spaces’?
OH: Ya, like they act with courage; they have a
of the main points or the criteria for the spaces that
we contacted too.
LWM: Is that what you see as important about the
spaces, that they are breathing organisms, they’re
changing, and, you said, having this courage to do
what you want. Is there some value that you see as
contributing towards Helsinki, and how Helsinki is
changing or was there some other ideology about
being inclusive?
OH: Ya of course inclusivity is also big. We also
invite and ask every space to use the ‘Safe Space
Principles’ and the spaces that we are inviting are
not making profits. The culture and community
around the space is the most important issue or
point for them to actually do their actions and create
programs for their spaces. And for the bigger view,
I think the small spaces are breathing organisms
that can invite and try different ideas more easily
than the bigger arts institutions, which makes them
a really good testing ground to develop ideas. I feel
that there are really ground-breaking ideas and
different structures going on in different spaces -
how they are organized in the first place, how they
make decisions, and how they actually distribute
the workload, and how they take care of volunteers,
and what is the care work they are doing. I feel like
there are a lot of different points of view that would
be interesting to see from these spaces. I’m hoping
when they’re listed in the map with their specialities
this will invite more people to actually participate in
developing these spaces, that these spaces would
get more visitors, more volunteers, or ideas for
future events or programs.
LWM: Are you personally involved with some of
the spaces, do you have favorite spaces that are
included, or spaces that you consider home bases
for yourself for your own projects?
OH: I’m one of the founders of QUERQ ry, which
is a quirky event venue located in Vallila. It’s a
decentralized organization and because it’s the only
space that I’ve seen the whole thing and how they
do it, it’s made me more curious to see how other
running the spaces, how they get funding for it,
and all those kind of structural things. Also the
other producer of the festival, Karmen, was one
of the founders of Kolo, which was a popular
vegan cafe in Kallio. We both have roots in this
kind of culture as well and the spaces.
LWM: Do you have some other kind of
background in academics?
OH: I’m actually an art educator, I graduated
a couple of years ago as a Master of Arts
from Aalto. Then I’ve also been working in
communications and just kind of learning
something I felt like I missed in school. Now I’m
doing my own projects on the side, like working
with Querq and then this festival.
LWM: Maybe the connection between art
education and communications could be you as
a facilitator - trying to make people aware and
then reinforce these smaller places’ ideals and
their own kind of programming too.
OH: You’re really right on point there. I’ve been
really thinking about what my role is and where
I would be a really good fit. I don’t have an
urge to be in the spotlight but I love lifting other
phenomenons around me up and presenting,
“Have you seen this? It’s amazing!” That’s more
of a role for me that I feel comfortable in and
good at, so this festival feels good for me to do
and comfortable in my nature. I feel that I can
make other people happy to see the spaces
that I see but aren’t known to a wider public.
LWM: Can you talk about where the name
comes from?
OH: The name, Alakaupunki, could translate to
“undercity” or “the city below”. The name is also K a t k e r a J o s s u
a reference to a Finnish word “alakulttuuri”,
meaning subcultures. We wanted to use the

word “kaupunki”, which tells about what’s
happening in the structures and between
the streets. And “ala” for us, it’s for the
underground culture or the subcultures that are
happening in the spaces between.
