sometimes call this museum a tourist trap, but believe me when I say
you need to go even if it is really that. It is a museum that contains the world’s
largest collection of ancient Mexican art and also has ethnographic exhibits
about Mexico’s present-day indigenous groups...
BUT my favorite thing from that museum, and it is what stays with you forever,
is the amazingly beautiful inverted fountain El Paraguas (the umbrella)
designed by Architect Pedro Ramirez Vazquez.
EAT 
Amelia Se Cocina (Goya 54, Insurgentes Mixcoac) is this little hidden
jewel in the middle of IBBY, the children’s library. You can go and sit
in their lovely terrace while you have their lunch which changes daily.
It is delicious food, always accompanied with fresh “agua fresca” of
different flavors. My favorite from their permanent menu is 100% their Cobb
Sandwich which comes with roasted cambray potatoes. Go and say hi to the
lovely chefs and owners, Julia and Connie.

I will recommend an author+illustrator combo. 
Francisco Hinojosa (writer) + Rafael Barajas aka El Fisgón
(illustrator) were a huge part of my childhood with their books.
The ones I remember the most are: Amadís de Anis, Amadis de
Codorniz, Aníbal y Melquiades and my favorite La Peor Señora del Mundo.
If you are learning spanish I recommend you look these titles up. They make it
look so easy to create funny and timeless stories.
LISTEN 
Elizabeth and Hugo Valdivieso are sister and brother and both of them
with Julio Sánchez are Valgur, a Mexican trio from Juchitán, Oaxaca.
They will transport you to the 80’s with their mixture of vaporwave,
traditional music and the Zapotec language. My favorite is “Zapandú”.

Do you get a bit seasick sometimes? Life is always full of waves, there’s some wake, it
can get a bit choppy out there. Not to mention the tides. Within waves there is a push and

Every month I feel the waves of Salarakas. Midmonth I often feel like I’m a little inflatable
lifeboat, hoping a seagull will come by and drop an oyster with a pearl inside. Sometimes
the captain of a pleasure craft will float by and tell me they’ve been observing us from
afar on the horizon all this time and we’ve given them something to look forward to and
that they could hear us across the expanse. Other times it can be a yacht that looks down
on us and doesn’t understand how we could be floating on our own in such a dingy.
Sometimes it feels like we’re sinking and other times that we’ve hit that sweet spot of
speed, heel, and sunshine - smooth sailing. That’s honestly most the time.
I want you to know that there’s always room in our lifeboat, or put plainly, everyone is
welcome in the Salarakas community all the time. We’re not fancy, we’re not provocative,
we’re not challenging, but we’re cruising along and we’d love if you want to join, with
whatever paddle or contributions you have. Somehow every month all of the contributions
for this tiny zine always fit and there’s always enough. I feel proud and humbled by the
connections made and the work inspired by the themes and available space on a page.
That’s it. I hope Salarakas makes you forget your phone, makes you feel not so alone,
and let’s you feel something within yourself or for another person. We’re an invisible

moved to Finland. I’m sitting outside with my

March and he says “hey, it’s the first day of
the year above 10 degrees. It feels positively
tropical!” I decided we had to make tropical
cocktails, starting with Singapore Slings.
Every year since then, I’ve hosted a tiki party,

The lead-up to the opening of
the bar has been a rollercoaster
of emotional waves. I’ve frequently
oscillated between the highs of seeing
dreams being realized, and the lows of
stress and anxiety that it’ll all fall apart.
What is your favorite wavy place?
Well, obviously the sea. At sail or sitting on
the shore are always the most purifying or
meditative places for me. Paradoxically, it’s
the constant motion of the water and the
attention it demands that creates the best
space for internal tranquility.

Do you have a manifesto?
HogoHuone is meant as a place of
accessibility and warmth for all those who
wish to take part in a peaceful and loving
(and thirsty!) community. It’s a place to slow
down, giggle, do a crossword, maybe take
your shoes off - if it doesn’t add too much
hogo.
Cocktail Suggestion: Ti’ Punch
Short for Petit Punch, this is a simple
Caribbean classic most popular in
Martinique and Guadeloupe. It should be
made with a fresh cane-juice rum, such as
Renegade Single Farm Rum (available at
the big Alko by Lasipalatsi).
30-60ml Renegade Single Farm Rum
Fresh lime juice to taste
Sweetener to taste (cane sugar, agave
syrup, honey are all good options)
