Conversation of Peace & Hope between the core contributors of Salarakas.
This month we decided to take some space to reflect with each other.
Do you have methods for finding peace?
Han Lei: In these uncertain times I try to think
that our life on this planet is unique, a given
gift, which ends too soon so I try to make it
count. Our existence is evanescent and that
is what makes it beautiful.
Long-winded Mary: I think this also gives me
some solace - nothing is so important and
anything can hold the most significance. I try
to remember what really matters to me and to
run my own race.
Nieve de Limón: I think about my family and
friends and how lucky I am to be part of their
lives and them a part of mine. Living far away
from my family in pandemic times can be very
hard but it also gives me hope and I cannot
wait to see them again. Also taking walks
outside keeps me at peace.
Dandylioness: I find peace in keeping good
routines, the ones that bring me pleasure,
which can be anything really - the first cup
of coffee in the morning or calling a friend.
My main source of finding peace is reading
poetry and listening to great philosophers’
ideas about our existance.
Yökiitäjä: I don’t have any methods because
I think I live in denial. But it is OK too, I try
not to demand too much from myself during
difficult times.
What gives you hope?
HL: If we look back at history, the world was
a terrible place in many ways, for example
200 years ago - more cruel, sadistic, unequal.
I think we have come a long way towards a
better world.
LWM: Aspects of progress also give me some
hope, that somehow the energy of today’s
youth will harness the tools and technology
previously used for greed and power to find
more widespread solutions for everyone.
I hope the next generation will replace the
old with more empathy, compassion, and
perspective.
NDL: Childhood brings me hope. Children
should have access to quality education but
also to quality parenting, and I believe that it
takes a village to parent a child. I believe we
all can add something positive to a child’s
life and we don’t need to be their biological
parents to do that. As a young child you
learn values and principles and it is the most
important time of a person’s life so it should
be cherished and protected at all costs. This
is what will make a new adult and that adult
will be in charge of the future.
D: Hope is everywhere, when eyes are ready
to see it. I find it in acts of kindness, having
intimacy with oneself or others, in flowers that
grow every season. Sometimes it surrounds
me and sometimes I know it’s there but I’m
not able to find it for sometime.
Y: My friends. And children. I don’t have any
of my own, but I like to surround myself with
children.
Do you have a personal mantra for
calming/confidence/positivity?
HL: Kaikki menee hyvin (everything is going
to be alright) and repeating 10-100 times.
LWM: I have many. Lately: I’m doing exactly
what I want to be doing. Old favorites: If you
build it, they will come. And: It’s only weird if
you make it weird.
NDL: My favorite and most common one is
“Calmantes montes, Mariana”, which means
calm yourself down, Mariana. I like the rhythm
of it. Literally it means calm hills, Mariana.
D: I tell myself that I am enough and perfect

to me.
