Getting Hungry through Pop Culture

1- Quentin Tarantino Films:
This article is in Lucky Peach’s Issue 4, The American Food Issue and it finally put into
words what I had always wanted to explain of Tarantino’s movies and how he portrays food.
I am not really a Tarantino fan, but the man knows how to give food its rightful place.
Extract from “A FEAST FOR THE EYES”, by Elvis Mitchell:
“When Tarantino’s behind the camera, he plays even more enthusiastically with food.
Often, it’s in services of awkwardness and the vibrations set off when the emphasis at a
meal shifts away from the food... In Pulp Fiction, when Jules and Vincent show up at dawn
to retrieve Marsellus’s briefcase from the apartment of junior criminal Brad. Jules takes
ownership of the room, strolling around the stunned and stuttering-with-panic Brad as if
examining a Cadillac on the showroom floor with a pocketful of cash. And as he politely
<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3
YUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUM <3 OHOOHOOHOOHOOHOOHOOHOOHO
invites himself to sample Brad’s Big Kahuna burger, Jules tells Brad that he doesn’t see meat
too often because “My girlfriend’s a vegetarian, which pretty much makes me a vegetarian.”
As Jules explains his lifestyle, the fear in the room heightens. There’s so much going on
at once, it’s an all-you-can-eat salad bar of tension. It also triggers the oddest response; it
makes us want a burger... It makes us hungry.”
This happens again in: Inglorious Bastards when Hans Landa asks for milk while
interrogating a French man that has been hiding a Jewish family. I want to drink a glass of
milk, even when I don’t drink cow’s milk anymore. It happens again when he eats Apple
Strudel with Shoshanna. The power of Cristoph Waltz and Tarantino.
Pulp Fiction, when Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace get to the 50’s diner and order a burger and
a 5 dollar milkshake... cuts to me wanting a strawberry milkshake.
I am obsessed with this so watch this video if you want more ---->
2- Hayao Miyazaki Films:
Do I need to explain? My god, give me some udon.
3-Tom’s Restaurant in Seinfeld (also “Tom’s Diner” by Suzanne Vega):
Every time I watch Seinfeld scenes at the diner, I want a Club Sandwich.
4- Dazed and Confused:
They go to a TOP NOTCH burger joint, and I cannot avoid thinking about getting a burger.
5- When Harry Met Sally:
I always get the urge to order a good sandwich during the infamous orgasm face scene.
6- ¡Ay amor... cómo me has puesto!:
When Tin Tan is cycling with the bread on top of his head, I always get the desire to eat
some pan dulce.
7- Ahí está el detalle from Cantinflas:
I always want to eat the chicken that Paz has cooked for him.

Dearest honeydumplings,
Because we need food, we necessarily each have a relationship with it - as we do our homes,
clothing, the air of the place we breath, the source of water, what makes us feel safe. It’s the
Post-meal

base of our hierarchy of needs. But with its surplus comes novelty, with time comes traditions,
with others an experience. Food is not just fuel. it’s a signifier of culture, a source of stress, a
gesture of love, it takes time, it is life. It’s always projected that in the future we might just take
a pill, shake, some space food, that we’ll become ultimately efficient and consume nutrients
like vitamins. But smell and taste are so intimately connected with our memories, family and
place. And we love tasty things. There’s a series - salt fat acid heat - these are the essentials
to flavor. Every culture hinges on these or dreams of them. Did you know in the U.S. there
are places called food deserts? These are places which have stores, but no fresh produce,
usually lower income areas - like feeding processed fake food to the poor is enough, that it’s
not starving to feed people only crap. The cheapest food is the least healthy. It’s the equivalent
of a drought - food without water, substance, nutrients. Food is also one of the largest sources
of waste in the U.S. Food holds such contempt - between protein, diets, fasts, organic, vegan,
rationing. Food is political, because it is essential. We are what we eat. Related to celebration,
times of day, geography, energy, lifestyle. Now I want to celebrate everyone’s special feelings
with food - they may feel a bit fucked, lazy, obsessive, like anything as complicated as life and
reflections of ourselves. Eat your heart out. <3
We hope you find comfort in the foods we offer here.

more fun” (Rodari, The Grammar of Fantasy, 1996, p.20)
In developing my MA Thesis, Cooking through Illustration, I employed Gianni Rodari’s
word games. Gianni Rodari is the basis of most of my creative world. His legacy to the
world of Education and Children’s books consists of ways to let children tell stories. Rodari
discarded the idea that to be creative; you have to be born with that talent. He believed
that anyone could learn to be creative by practicing. He designed a set of techniques to
practice creativity and imagination. Herbert Kohl, in his foreword to Rodari’s The Grammar
of Fantasy, talks about “The possibilities of things” and the “what if” question. What if you
could change the meaning of words?
The world of possibilities for everything in the world is overwhelming, but it also nourishes
curiosity. Rodari showed educators and parents ways to collaborate with children when
creating and telling stories. From all of Rodari’s techniques, I chose two, “The Fantastic
Binomial” and “What would happen if”... also known as “the fantastical hypothesis”.
The first one is the most known Rodari strategy, and it consists of pairing two words. That
would be a normal binomial, but to make a fantastic one, the two words have to be distant
from each other so that your imagination forces itself to find ways to link them. You connect
them with prepositions and create a phrase, and finally, from that phrase or phrases, you
create a fantastic situation.
Example:
1.two unrelated words

2.connect with a preposition

3.create the fantastic situation

4. and the final premise
