Vuokko woke up in the middle of the night, or so it felt like. She
had been dreaming. In the dream, she owned a hotel by the sea.
She walked towards the shore where people sipped dark drinks
in silence, sitting in tall chairs in front of a bar with dim lights. A
song played in the background, cumbia cumbia de luna, cumbia
cumbia de sol, cumbia cumbia que alegra, cumbia mi corazón. A
man sat alone drinking, and Vuokko sat next to him.
‘I feel lonely’, the man said. Vuokko opened her mouth with a
reply, but before uttering a word, shewoke up. In her bed, with
her eyes wide open and her heart beating fast, she didn’t own a
hotel but a small home in Torkkelinkatu.
She stood up in the middle of the kitchen and drank a glass
of water, looking at the piled boxes around her. ‘It’s hard to be
back’, she thought. ‘I’ll sit and wait for Hesari to come’, she said
to herself while making coffee. It started snowing, and she felt
sadder than she had felt before that day, pierced by the dream.
Curling up in the armchair with the coffee cup next to her, she
fell asleep again. The same song played but now it was louder,

no-one danced; people still sat and drank. Vuokko looked at
her feet drowning in the sand. She raised her gaze and saw the
man again. ‘I’m leaving’, she addressed him all of a sudden. He
nodded, and smiled. ‘You are’, he replied. ‘It’s
dark up there sometimes’, he said raising his eyebrows.
She woke up startled by the newspaper finally hitting the floor.
It would be dark still for few hours.
‘I’m old’, she thought.
‘I must breath’, she said aloud, and headed to the shower.
‘I have to sleep’, she decided afterwards, and her wet hair
touched the pillow.
This time she didn’t dream; she barely breathed amongst her
unpacked boxes.
Hours later it wasn’t sunny but at least it was bright, with a grey
winter light touching everything after the snow. Vuokko entered
the tiny café she chose every morning, where a tall girl looked
at her with curiosity from behind the counter. She sat next to the
window, and sighed. She opened the newspaper, she emptied
her mind and tried to fill it again. ‘Coffee here tastes like water’,
she thought, and felt bitter.
