How can law students get out of the predicament of internship confusion?

KAMPAR: Nowadays, many law students are confused about the internship, or face difficulties
during the internship. Based on this phenomenon, I invited Chen Zi Mun as an interview subject. She
is a student of the Law Department of Taylor’s University and is currently in the internship stage.
The following news will take Zi Mun's two internship experiences as a reference to help law students
get out of the predicament.

Zi Mun said that she had faced the stage of internship confusion. At first, she chose to stay as an
intern in a small firm in Batu Pahat, Johor State in order to accompany her mother and take care of
her father in hospital. During January and February this year, she doubted her ability every day
during her internship, because she was never affirmed by her boss, and she didn't get substantive
feedback on her work. Due to the small scale of the company, there are only three people in the
whole company. "Many times I am alone, one goes to the tea room to eat, one sits in the office and
works hard, and one stays to guard the company. This is very different from the internship I
imagined." she said. At the end of February, the boss asked her if she wanted to do it in March, but
she told her that she had other plans, so she ended the first internship early. She hasn't been very
happy these two months, because the company is too small, and she needs help to deal with other
things, such as receiving customers. This has nothing to do with the law, so she feels that it is a waste
of time and has not been supported. In this period, she has been looking for another favourite law
firm and submitted her resume.

Until March when she worked as an intern at the firms of Chooi & Company ("C&C") in Kuala
Lumpur, she discovered that" mentor would invite interns to dinner on the first day of internship,
because the practice in the legal profession is that seniors treat them. In the past, you didn't need to
do odd jobs in a law firm, just do things related to law. It turns out that three meals during the
internship can be enjoyed with colleagues. "Even the partners who have won many awards are very
friendly and humble. This big firm has a large team, the whole company is systematic, each
department has a clear work assignment, and the work done is praised and given feedback, which
makes her feel supported. One of the most touching things for Zi Mun is that she can go to the high
court for an internship with seniors. On March 24th, the day when she went to court for the first time,
she described, "I saw many lawyers wearing formal clothes, walking with confidence, and pulling
some luggage with documents for court." She yearns for the confident and beautiful attitude of a
lawyer. At that time, she was very glad that she studied law, because this is what she wants to be in
the future.

She thinks there is a way to judge whether to end the internship early. The first point is that she is
unhappy every day, because the boss will not affirm, give back or praise her work, which makes her
gradually doubt her ability. Secondly, she thinks the boss's personality and values are very important,
because everyone works in the same team. In the beginning, her first impression of the lawyer
industry was to uphold justice. However, the values of the boss of the small firm were different and
conflicted with hers, and the boss put interests first, which led to the disharmony between them.
Thirdly, she felt that it was not a shameful thing to end her internship early, which was not
necessarily her own fault and problem. When you feel uncomfortable or unhappy, you should change
your environment and always pay attention to your own feelings.

Zi Mun reminded other law students who are going to practice: "During the internship, you should
apply what you have studied in the university to the actual situation of your customers. You should
not follow the knowledge learned in the university rigidly, you may use it flexibly." During these
two internship periods, she learned a lot, and her main job was to assist lawyers. The scope of work
includes doing legal research, and she needs to look at suitable principles or other case examples to
help the company handle the case. Besides, she should learn to draft documents, because a case
needs to prepare a lot of documents. And the third point is networking, learning how to communicate
with others and opening social circles in the workplace.
