0:10 | Alright, so what you are going to be doing, is you are now going to be taking everything that you
have learned about osmosis and about solutions and you are going to be applying it to some problems.
Okay.

0:21 | So there is a couple of things you are going to consider in each of these situations before we try
and solve them. What you are looking at here is an animal cell that has been place into a beaker with a
solution. Okay, your animal cell has a concentration of water and a concentration of solute and your
beaker, your solution in your beaker has a concentration of water and a concentration of solute. You are
going to be comparing the outside environment to the inside environment and deciding how water is
going to move in each of these situations. Okay, and is the outside environment hypertonic, isotonic, or
hypotonic in relation to the inside of the cell. Okay.

1:02 | So looking at our first one. The first thing you are going to do in these problems is you are going to
look at water in each of the scenarios. So my water inside of the cell is 90% so inside of my cell I have
90% water. Outside of my cell in my solution I have 85% water. So water inside my cell at 90 is higher
than the one outside the cell. So my cell water is higher, my solution water is lower.

1:36 | I’m then going to look at my solute concentration. Okay, my solute concentration inside the cell,
10%, my solute concentration outside the cell, 15. So higher solute outside the cell than inside the cell,
and I have lower solute. Okay.

1:58 | Now, If my solution outside the cell is hypertonic my water would want to go out of the cell. If my
solution outside the cell is hypotonic my water will want to go inside the cell. If it is iso I will have equal
movement in between. Since I have higher water inside the cell than outside the cell and higher solute
outside the cell is my outside environment hyper, hypo, or isotonic? …Hypertonic. I have a higher solute
concentration compared to water when I compare my outside environment to my inside. So my outside
environment is hypertonic.

2:40 | Since my outside environment is hypertonic, will my water go into or out of the cell. (out) It’s
going to go out of the cell.

2:45 | Okay, so for each of the situations you will have to say where is water going to go, and is the
outside of the cell hyper, hypo, or isotonic.

2:54 | So, looking at problem number 2 inside my cell I have 40% water, 60% solute. Outside the cell I
have 90% water, 10% solute. Do I have more water inside or outside the cell? (outside). Outside yep. So I
have less water inside, higher water outside. And I have more solute inside and I have less solute
outside.

3:29 | Does this make my outside, insi….Hyper, hypo, or isotonic. Is the outside of the cell compared to
the inside hyper, hypo, or isotonic… Hypotonic, yep. Because I have more water, lower solute compared
to the inside.

4:00 | So if my outside environment is hypotonic, is water going to go into or out of the cell. (into). Into
the cell. Okay
4:12 | So you are going to do the same thing as these two for all of the problems on the first page. Then
the second page.

4:19 | You are going to have to finish the equation so that you can compare the concentrations to each
other. Okay.

4:28 | So, inside the cell everything should equal 100, outside the cell everything should equal 100. So
no matter what, each of your concentrations of your solutions should equal 100 percent. Okay, so
everything needs to equal 100 percent inside and outside.

4:47 | If on the inside of the cell I have a 10% solute concentration. What should I have for my water
concentration? 90%. For my outside of the cell if I have a 20% solute concentration how much water
should I have? 80%. Everything should add up to 100.

5:07 | So, now we have our numbers. Does our cell have more water or less water than the outside
environment? More water, yep. So our inside of the cell has higher water, outside of the cell solution has
lower water.

5:28 | What about solute. What’s the solute inside the cell, higher or lower? Lower, and I have higher
solute outside in the solution.

5:39 | So now, is my outside environment hyper, hypo, or isotonic compared to the inside of the cell?
Hypertonic yep.

5:54 | is water going to go into or out of the cell? Outside, yep. Okay.

6:04 | So one the reverse page, the second page, you are going to have to finish solving what each of the
solute concentration are. It should always equal 100 inside and outside and then you’ll have to decide
where water is going and is the solution outside of the cell hyper, hypo, or isotonic. Okay.

6:22 | Once your done with your worksheet. This worksheet is not due til the start of class tomorrow. So
finish this in class today, get as much done as you can. Submit this on Schoology then you have two exit
tickets, because we didn’t do Fridays. So you will have the exit tickets to complete and turn in. Once you
have done those, go back and check and make sure that all of your work is submitted so far for the unit.
Okay, if you already know that you have submitted everything so far in this unit, start studying for your
quiz. Okay. Does anyone have any questions? Alright, so you have today to catch-up. Work on today’s
stuff and then catch up on anything that you may be missing.
