2.0 Background for the visit:
2.1 Dry Dock
Boiler / burner overhaul and inspection

3.0 Service performed:


3.1 The boiler / burner were inspected and open on smoke and fire side

There was soot collected on the smoke side, and the cleaner had to repeat cleaning
in order to get the pin tube clean

The oil fired side was looking descent clean at top and bottom, but when hand lamp
was put in to furnace it was not possible to see any light in the top

Before cleaning, no light was passing through pin tube

Shipyard was cleaning all 6 pin tubes inside the oil-fired side of the boiler. The 2 aft
tubes they had to cleaned several times before they were cleaned to a point that light
from the bottom was indicating the hole way around the pin tube

There was scale indication on boiler tube water side and it is recommended to have
the boiler asset out within the next 1 to 2 years

1 mm scale can reduce boiler efficiency with up to 40 %
There was no scale on the water side in the boiler on Cap Palmerston

Burner annuals ring condition was good and no refractory needed to be replaced
here

On the boiler floor there was a lot of loose material that was collected and cleaned
out

One Heating element was not working, this is on the return line from burner and not
that important, the valve for return is under normal operation closed so there is no
oil flow to cool the heater, this is the reason it is burned

The burner fuel pressure and temperature was set


Pressure at burner was adjusted
The O2 level was high from burner but soot ppm was in min load 100 ppm and in
max 12 ppm smoke.
visual indication is when it is over 120 ppm smoke

Fuel temperature should be about 130 C

There is 2 flame control unit, they are supposed to indicate orange when flame is
present. Both unit is in working condition but one of them do not indicate flame but
it is activating when flame is there and closing the shut down loop and will open
when flame is going out

3.5 Soot remover


There was request from ship regarding soot remover
Soot remover is only working if it is maintain on regular basic on a clean boiler, this
will quote the steel, so that soot don’t bind to hot steel

Regarding to chemical dosing, at start up the water need 2.5 L to 5.0 L for ea ton of
water in the boiler
