1. Thesis Statements

A. One or two sentence (for our purposes in this class;

longer pieces of writing will have longer thesis

statements)

B. Encapsulates the overall message or idea of the

whole essay.

C. One template: [Main Claim] because [Reason 1],

[Reason 2], [Reason 3].

D. Each element in your thesis statement should be

developed further in at least one body paragraph.

E. As we move beyond the 5-paragraph essay format, our

thesis statement formulations will have to evolve as

well.
