1. Conclusions

A. For the purposes of this class, we’ll be looking at

conclusions for 3-5 page papers, which should be about

one paragraph.

B. Goals in a conclusion:

1. Transition from the body of your essay into the

conclusion.

2. Revisit your thesis without repeating it

verbatim (word for word)

3. Review how the arguments and evidence you’ve

put forward in your paper support your thesis

4. A “What Now” statement

A. Your “What Now” statement suggests how

you’d like your reader to react to what you’ve

written. Maybe you hope they’ll think or act

differently? Or take a particular action?


C. As with introductions, conclusions will scale with

the size of the piece they are a part of. A book may

have a chapter-length conclusion.
