Motivation: Reading a short story

Important terms:

Indigenous Peoples are distinct social and cultural groups


that share collective ancestral ties to the lands and natural
resources where they live, occupy or from which they
have been displaced.

Manobo tribe, "Manobo" is the hispanicized form of


"Manuvu," which, of course, means "people." Their
origins can be traced back to the early Malay peoples who
came from the surrounding islands of Southeast Asia.

“A trip to Butuan City”

Ben and his companion Mina are on their way to


Butuan City from Kitcharao, Agusan Del Norte. Mina is a
member of Kitcharao's Manobo Tribe. Mina wondered
how fast the bus was going as they traveled. She was also
curious as to how far and how long it would take them to
get from their home to the city itself. She tried to question
the driver. “We're doing 53 kilometers per hour, so we'll
be in the city proper in about 1.5 hours," the driver said.
"How did you figure out how quickly the bus was going?"
Mina told the driver. "Oh, I check the speedometer," the
driver explained. "Can you tell me what a speedometer is?
Mina said. The driver remarked, "A speedometer or speed
meter is a device on a vehicle's dashboard that indicates its
speed." Mr. Driver, thank you for the information," Mina
replied. "Ben, did you know how far our trip from our
house to the city main is?" Mina returned to her seat and
asked. "Neither do I, my friend," Ben said to Mina. "I'm
quite interested in it, Ben," Mina replied. "Oh, don't
worry, my friends from Butuan Central Elementary
School's Grade VI Zamora know how to calculate the
distance, and I'm sure they'll be able to help us."

Example: (Distance of Butuan to Davao) kilometers
The units of measurement of distance are kilometer (km),
meter (m), centimeter (cm), millimeter (mm).

Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast an object is


moving”. Speed can be thought of as rate by which an object
covers distance.
Example: 55 km/h
The units of measurement of speed are kilometer per hour
(km/h), minute per second (min/sec), centimeter per second
(cm/sec), millimeter per second (mm/sec).

Time is the quantity measured or measurable period during


which an action, process, or condition exists or continues.
Example: 4 hours
The units of measurement of time are hour (h), minute (min),
second (sec).
“Now, returning to the short narrative, it is said that the
bus that Ben and Mina are on is traveling at 53 kilometers
per hour and will arrive in Butuan City in 1.5 hours; let us
calculate the distance between Kitcharao and the City
Proper."
