2. Do you have any idea about geothermal power plants?

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1

Energy from the volcano

Our country is a home to more than a hundred volcanoes, energy has been tapped from
them. Actually, the Philippines ranks second in the world’s production of geothermal energy.

What is geothermal energy?

The heat from the Earth’s interior is a source of energy called geothermal energy.

How is geothermal energy generated?

Geothermal energy is generated into two ways: geothermal power plants and geothermal
heat pumps. They differ in depth of heat source to produce energy.

In geothermal power plants, the heat from deep inside the earth is used to produce steam to
generate electricity while in geothermal heat pumps, they use the heat coming from close to the
Earth’s surface to heat water or provide heat for buildings.

The following steps are followed to generate electricity in a geothermal power plant:
1. Wells are drilled upon into the earth to pump steam or hot water to the surface.
2. When the water reaches the surface, the drop in pressure causes the water to turn into steam.
3. The team spins a turbine, which is connected to a generator that produces electricity.
4. Cooling tower cools the steam which it condenses back to water.
5. The cooled water is pumped back into the earth to begin the process again.

E. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #2

F. Developing Mastery (Leads to Formative Assessment 3)

Directions: Identify what is being asked in the following sentences:
1. A heat from inside the earth is used to produce steam to generate electricity.
2. Use the heat coming from close to earth surface to heat water or provide heat for
buildings.
3. The heat from the Earth’s interior is a source of energy called
4-5. Geothermal energy is generated into two ways: ____, _____.

G. Finding Practical Applications of Concepts in Daily Living

The teacher will ask the students about the impact of using geothermal power plant and
geothermal heat pumps to human lives.

H. Making Generalizations and Abstractions about the Lesson

The teacher will ask questions:
1. How energy from volcano may be tapped for human use?
2. What is geothermal energy?
3. Enumerate two ways to generate geothermal energy.

I. Evaluating Learning
Directions: Arrange the following statements to come up with the correct steps in generating
electricity in a geothermal power plant. Use letters A – E.

___1. Cooling tower cools the steam, which condenses it back to water.
___2. Cooled water is pumped back into the earth to begin the process again.
___3. Steam spins a turbine, which is connected to a generator that produces electricity.
___4. Wells are drilled deep into the earth to pump steam or hot water to the surface.
___5. When the water reaches the surface, the drop in pressure causes the water to turn into
steam.
Answers:
1. D 2. E 3. C 4. A 5. B

J. Additional Activities for Applications or Remediation

Assignment: What are the disadvantages of volcanic eruption to human life?

V. REMARKS:

VI. REFLECTION
A. No. of learners who earned 80% in the evaluation

B. No. of learners who require additional activities for remediation

C. Did the remedial lessons work? No. of learners who have caught up with the lesson

D. No. of learners who continue to require remediation

F. Which of my teaching strategies work well? Why did these work?

G. What difficulties did I encounter which my principal or supervisor can help me solve?
