Background
Weeds reduce cop productivity since they can lead to low yields in the field or during storage. Weed effects can also result in low grade quality of the yield at
marketing stage. Therefore it is important for a farmer to make sure that weeds are controlled at the right stage of plant growth, and using the most effective
control methods. It is with this background that learners should be able to identify common weeds and classify weeds.

PART A

1. Identify 10 most common weeds in the school garden. (10)


2. Choose any 6 weeds identified above and state their local/ venecular names (Shona) (6).
3. Give 4 mode of spread of common weeds (4).

PART B

4. Collect and preserve by drying weed samples identified in part A. (10)


5. Classify each collected weed according to:
a) Broad leaved weeds (5)
b) Narrow leaved weeds (5)

CALA TIPS

1. Visit the school garden early morning or early evening for easy identification of weeds.
2. Collect common weeds but with different leaf morphology.
3. Refer to notes and textbooks.

Cala context

There are many species of weeds that are found in and around the school which affect crop production. For this reason the teacher thought it is important for
learners to identify, collect, preserve and classify weeds according to leaf morphology.
