e. Discussing new The Weeping Woman
concepts and practicing Pablo Picasso
new skills #2
It is an iconic image of unspeakable grief and pain, representing universal suffering. The painting is
often seen as reflecting their complex and often stormy relationship. It is an oil painting which is
considered as one of Picasso’s most famous abstract portraits.

Description: The Weeping Woman is a type of artwork that is expressionism. The background is
completed with different lines and colors. The main colors that are used are green, yellow, blue, purple,
red and black. The mode and visual effect that this painting portrays can be considered to be suffering
and sadness.

Analysis: The colors that the author uses can be considered quite different as each color conveys a
separate impression. The light purple that at the bottom of the woman’s eyes conveys sadness. The face
with green and yellow portrays solid emotions.

Interpretation: Picasso wanted us to feel and understand the pain she was going through. The
handkerchief she tries to stuff in her mouth seems as shard of glass. We can see that she has peeled away
her flesh by corrosive tears to reveal her bones. It was not easy to become woman.

Judgment: Finally, the artist’s value is to evoke pain. This due to the colors that Picasso used and the
shapes that he draws; not only these technical elements but also the images that the painter uses within
the actual face of the woman.
