Abstract: hydraulic press is a machine using a hydraulic cylinder to generate a compressive force. Frame,

hydraulic cylinder and press table are the main components of the hydraulic press. In this project press
frame, cylinder and press table are designed by the design procedure. They are analyzed to improve their
performance and quality for press working operation. Using the optimum resources possible in designing
the hydraulic press components can effect reduction in the cost by optimizing the weight of material
utilized for building the structure. An attempt has been made in this direction to reduce the volume of
material. So in this project we consider an industrial application project consisting of mass minimization
of H frame type hydraulic press. This press has to compensate the forces acting on the Gas Tube and has
to fulfil certain critical constraints. Here we use implementation for analysis and optimization of
hydraulic press. The aim of this project is to integrate the mechanical system of hydraulic press with
hydraulic system to facilitate the ease of operation to manufacture the smaller parts in a bulk. In the
present scenario, time constrain is a crucial part for completion of any production process. Thus, with the
aid of atomization, the production time can be reduced as well as higher degree of accuracy can be
achieved as the human efforts will be alleviated. Thus an attempt has been made to provide the smooth
and rapid functioning of press work with the help of hydraulic system.

1.1 INTRODUCTION :

The purpose of this work is to understand the knowledge of design ,analysis and mechanism of
hydraulic press machine. The design is an environment friendly and uses simple mechanism
properties such as hydraulic system, press mechanism and sensor system etc. In this, some press force
is needed to press the gas tube. The design is so done that the knowledge of designing, mechanism
and forces are increased. This project consists of designing and analysis of hydraulic press machine
for gas tube, considering various important parameters.

In this project, designing & analysis of a machine to press the gas tube so the shape of gas tube
will be change according to our requirement . As well as the analysis of structure, base plate and
other parts of plates was very important in order to carry out this project to ensure that what are needs
to do. This project involves the process of designing and analysis of different parts of this hydraulic
press machine considering forces and ergonomic factor for people to use. This project is mainly about
generating a new concept of analysis and designing that would make easier to reduce cost and easier
to press gas tube. After the design has completed, it was transformed to its analysis part where the
design is used for guideline.

1.3 PROBLEM DIFINATION:


The machine which can change the shape of Gas tube according to requirement and analysing and
finding the maximum stress induced in model during the working condition.

1.4 OBJECTIVE:

1) To Design special purpose Hydraulic power press machine of capacity 5 Ton.


2) To perform modelling hydraulic press using suitable CAD software.
3) To Analysis gas tube and bottom plate.

1. “Design And Fabrication Of 5 Ton Hydraulic Press”


Authors: Mr. Mohammed Iqbal Khatib & Mr. Roshan Zameer Ahmed,

The hydraulic cylinder is to generatea compressive force. It attempt has been in this direction to reduce
the volume ofmaterial. So in this paper they consider an industrial application project consisting of
mass minimization of h frame type hydraulic press.
The aim of this paper is to integrate the mechanical system of hydraulic press with hydraulic
system to facilitate the ease of operation to manufacture the particular job or product. This paper

in these paper, discuss 30- ton hydraulic press was designed, constructed and tested using locally sourced
materials . The major components of the press designed includes the cylinder and piston arrangement, the
frame and the hydraulic circuit., it also calculate the Hydraulic Cylinder,Cylinder End-Cover Plate, Bolts,
etc it is also discuss about Manufacturing Procedure.

4 . “Hydraulic Press with LS System for Modelling of Plastic Working Operations”

Authors: Dr.R.A.Shrma

In this research paper discuss the electro-hydraulic system, hydraulic press, load sensing system,
plastic working operation. There is aim three kinds of controllers are used in Ls system and
Characterized hydraulic press includes mechanical and hydraulic parts, measurement control system
and electric supply system. For assurance of correct measure and control system work, frequency
changer should be equipped with filter against sensor work interference.

The Operating panel was programmed by using the object MAC Programmer & Packet.
Hydraulic system were constructed from typical elements with high reliability makes simple and
easy construction for maintenance.

5. Design & Fabrication Of Hydraulic Press”.

3.1 RESEARCH OF METHODOLOGY


• Visiting a company:-
After the formation and deciding of project group and guide we started searching for a
different idea regarding project. After we select a suitable project from the list of projects carried out
in the planning.

• Action plan:-
Designs consist of application of scientific, principle, technical information and imagination
for development of new or improved machine or mechanism to free from a specific with maximum
economy and efficiency.
Hence carefully design approach has to be adopted the design work has been split into two part.
i. System design
ii. Mechanical design

• System:-
It has mainly concerned the various physical constraints and ergonomics, space requirement,
arrangement of various component and workstations on main frame or base table at system, man and
machine interaction, number of control, servicing aids ease of maintenance, weight of machine from
ground level total weight of machine and lot of more.
1. Mechanical designs:-
The components are listed down and store on the basis of procurement, design in two categories
namely,
i. Design parts
ii. Analysis part

For designed parts detached design is done and distinctions thus obtained are compared to
next highest dimensions which are radially available in market. This amplifies the assembly as well
post production servicing works. The various tolerances on the work are specified.
The parts which are to be analysis directly are selected from various category.

2. System design:-
In this we mainly conclude the following parameters:-
(1) System based on physical constraint
(2) Arrangement of various components
(3) Chances of failure
(4) Servicing facility
(5) Height of machine
(6) Weight of machine

• Modification in design
During analysis of parts sometimes precision and accuracy is not obtained due to initial
design, so there is necessity of change in actual design.
Also the products available in the market at a fixed rate which sometimes is not affordable. So for
that reason change in design is necessary.

4.1 MATERIAL SELECTION:

Material selection is a very vital step in the process of machine design. Selection of material
depends upon following aspects:

1. Performance Requirements: Material is selected considering the design constraints and


performance requirements e.g. loads acting on the member, size & weight constraints,
environmental conditions, desired reliability & durability etc.

2. Material Properties: Performance requirements are compared with properties of materialsto


select the best suitable material. For example stress level estimated for any machine member
is compared with the strength of the available materials. Properties can be Physical (melting
point, co-efficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, specific heat, specific gravity,
electrical conductivity, magnetic properties etc.), Chemical (corrosion resistance, reactivity
with acids, bases, water etc.), Mechanical (hardness, toughness, ductility, malleability etc.) or
Manufacturing (cast ability, weld ability, formability, machinability etc.). Any of these
properties can become important depending upon the design requirements and environmental
conditions.

3. Manufacturing Aspects: Along with the selection of material designer also has to decide
about the manufacturing processes to be used to give it desired shape. Therefore in addition to
the manufacturing properties of the material, manufacturing constraints are also to be taken
care of, while selecting a particular material.

4. Availability & Cost: Material selected should be easily available at an acceptable cost. In
addition to the material cost, total cost of fabrication is also considered as the desired shape
has to be given to the material with best quality and least cost.
Availability of a large number of materials with varying properties makes the job of material
selection very difficult. Also due to dynamic nature of the market, cost keeps on varying, desiring
the designer to remain updated about the available materials and their cost.

Considering all the above quality’s and Technical Factors we chose a material for parts as
bellows
• Base structure – mild steel
• Die – die steel or WPS (Welding Procedure Specification )
• Bolt – stainless steel

• Shafts – Induction hard chrome plated shaft

• Structure Member – Mild Steel ,CI

4.1.1 Mild Steel (MS):


It is used for structure.
• Mild steel is one of the most common of all metals and one of the least expensive steels
used. It is to be found in almost every product created from metal.
• It is weld able, very durable (although it rusts), it is relatively hard and is easily annealed.
• Having less than 2% carbon it will magnetize well and being relatively inexpensive can be
used in most projects requiring a lot of steel.
• Because of its poor resistance to corrosion it must be protected by painting or otherwise
sealed to prevent it from rusting.

Chemical Composition:
• Carbon C = 0.23% max
• Sulphur S = 0.055% max
• Phosphorous P = 0.055% max

Mechanical Properties:
• Yield Strength Y.S. = 26.0 kg/mm2 (minimum)
• Ultimate Tensile Strength U.T.s. = 42.0-56.0 kg/mm2
Elongation = 23% (minimum)

4.1.2 Stainless Steel:


In chemical plant we use Stainless steel bolts. The details and requirement of such fasteners are as
follow.
b) Mechanical Properties: - The stainless steel bolt material should have following mechanical
properties.
• Ultimate Tensile Stress : 52.5 kg/mm2 (min.)
• Yield Strength (0.2% offset) : 21 kg/mm2 (min.)
• Percentage Elongation : 30% (min.)
• Percentage Reduction : 50% (min.)

Chemical Composition: - Percentage of various elements in stainless steel is as follow.


• Carbon : 0.08 (max.)
• Manganese : 2.00 (max.)
• Phosphorous : 0.045 (max.)
• Sulphur : 0.030 (max.)
• Silicon : 1.00 (max.)
• Nickel : 10.00 to 14.00
• Chromium : 16.00 to 18.00
• Molybdenum : 2.00 to 3.00

4.1.3 Cast Iron

The cast iron is obtained by re-melting pig iron with coke and limestone in a furnace knows as cupola.
It is basically an alloy of iron and carbon. The carbon content in cast iron varies from 1.7 percent to 4.5
percent. It also contains small amount of manganese, silicone, sulphur and phosphorous. The
properties, which make cast iron valuable, is its low cost, good casting characteristic, high compressive
strength, wear resistance and excellent machinability.
Ultimate strength of cast iron is a follow:
• Tensile strength 1000 to 2000 kg/cm2 ,
• compressive strength 4000 to 10,000 kg/cm2
• Shear strength 1200 kg/cm2 .
As tensile and shear strength is low hence it could not be used in those parts, which are subjected
to tensile, shear or shock load. The various types of cast iron are gray cast iron, white cast iron, mottled
cast iron and alloys cast iron, but in hydraulic press mostly we use gray cast iron.
• carbon : 3 to 3.5 %
• silicon : 1 to 2.75%
• manganese : 0.40 to 1.00%
• phosphorous : 0.15 to 01.5%

6) Design of die
Dies are an essential tool used in the manufacturing industry. They work like molds to create objects in
custom and often complex shapes. From small fasteners and tool bits to large automotive components
and machine parts, dies are used to create a variety of products.
Material :- WPS(die steel )
For die steel shearing diameter for 5 Ton

d = 80mm
1) For tube Diameter, i.e 28 mm outer diameter, 20 mm inner diameter of tube
Diameter of die = outer diameter +1mm= 29 + 1 = 29mm
The die dimeter is depend on gas tube
