IMPORTANT
POINTS IN
WORK
IMMERSION

INTRODUCTION

Grade 12 Senior High School Students have started their work immersion related

to their selected academic track or their selected vocational course. Work immersion

sounds stressful for senior high-school students. Yet, as part of the K to12 curriculum, it

17

Downloaded by Juliana Nery (julianamercadonery@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20918942

is one of the course requirements for graduation. A Senior High School student has to

undergo Work Immersion in an industry that directly relates to the student’s

postsecondary goal. Through Work Immersion, the students are exposed to and

become familiar with work-related environment related to their field of specialization to

enhance their competence. It also trains students and strengthen their skills or expertise

for their work in the future.

As cited by the article “K-12 Work Immersion Program of Senior High School

Students” (2018) that according to the Department of Education (DepEd), this program

is an 80-hour hands-on encounter which Senior High students must experience to open

them to the genuine working environment setting and improve their abilities learned in

school. The Department of Labor and Employment said work this is an integral part of

the K to 12 Program in fully realizing its goal to produce job-ready graduates equipped

with industry-based skills. DOLE strongly affirms that work immersion contributes to the

full realization of the objectives of the K to 12 Program.

Work immersion is useful as it enables Senior High students to decide if what

they have chosen in school is what they want to have as a career. Being able to test

their skills and knowledge in practice will help them develop their career choice.

OBJECTIVES OF WORK IMMERSION

The main objectives of the work immersion according to the Department of

Education (DepEd), the trainees or students are expected to:

18

Downloaded by Juliana Nery (julianamercadonery@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20918942

 gain relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts

and workers;

 appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories taught in

school;

 enhance their technical knowledge and skills;

 enrich their skills in communications and human relations; and

 develop good work habits, attitudes, appreciation, and respect for work

These prepare them to meet the needs and challenges of employment or higher

education after graduation. You can visit the link below to see the full course description

of work immersion:

IMPORTANT POINTS IN WORK IMMERSION

GUIDELINES / POLICY BEFORE WORK IMMERSION

19

Downloaded by Juliana Nery (julianamercadonery@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20918942

According to the DepEd Order No. 30, Section 5, Series of 2017. There are

principles, policies and guidelines they should consider first before they can send a

student to their affiliate company, establishment or other institution to start the work

immersion.

1. Work Immersion requires parental consent.

2. Partner Institutions and Work Immersion Venues shall be selected only after thorough

study, screening and preparation to ensure that each venue is a safe, secure, and

suitable place for learning. All applicable safety guidelines of TESDA, DOLE, and the

work immersion venue relevant to basic education shall apply.

3. Schools may partner with any institution or organization duly registered/recognized by

any accrediting government agency. These may include cooperatives, local government

units (LGUs), duly registered companies, and non-government organizations (NGOs).

Annex B provides suggested institutions for corresponding specializations.

4. All Work Immersion agreements at the school level must be covered by a

Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the security of all parties involved. All MOM must

specify that all parties will conform to these guidelines. All learner activities shall be

reflected in the MOA as stipulated in the Prescribed Template for the List of

Tasks/Activities to be done during Work Immersion which can be found in Annex C.

5. The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for Work Immersion must have provisions for

the following:

20

Downloaded by Juliana Nery (julianamercadonery@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20918942

a. creation of a Joint Working Group (JWG), the JWG's functions and

responsibilities, and the responsibilities of each of the partners

b. access to and use of partner institution's facilities by learners and teachers;

c. provision of supervisors/mentors from the partner institution

d. assurance that the workplace is a conducive and safe learning environment;

e. list of learner activities as stipulated in the prescribed template in Annex C

f. for the Partner Institution to orient the school on the work learners will engage
in based on the activities listed in the Prescribed Template for the Immersion
Program of Activities

g. insurance for learners in DepEd schools, charged to MODE (For private high
schools, colleges and universities, local universities and colleges, state
universities and colleges, and technical and vocational schools, the insurance fee
paid by the learners during enrolment shall be utilized for work immersion.
Insurance fees may also be included in the voucher.)

h. Work Immersion-related expenses like insurance and transportation allowance

may be treated as a donation under DepEd's Adopt-A-School Program

i. See attached Annex D of these guidelines for sample of MOM. This does not
preclude the parties from adding other provisions which are beneficial to the
learners.

6. DepEd, in collaboration with its partners and stakeholders, shall ensure that all

schools and venues for learning are conducive to the education and safety of the

learners. The safety of the learners is primary. Consequently, the maximum number

of hours spent in the work immersion venue is 40 hours per week and no more than

eight (8) hours per day as provided for by law, for a child below 18 but older than 15.

7. School Partnerships Focal Persons must be capacitated with networking skills and

cultivating connections with possible partner institutions. 8. Although one of the

objectives of the Work Immersion is to develop skills that are relevant to the needs of

the job market in the area, Work Immersion should not be reduced to a mere

recruitment tool of a Partner Institution. While the graduates' future employment in

the industry may be one of the desired outcomes of the partnership, the latter should

be designed in such a way that graduates will also acquire other skills and

competencies and will qualify for other job options and not be limited to those offered

by one Partner Institution.

9. Expenses in securing partnerships, such as the travel expense of the School

Partnerships Focal Person and the Immersion Teacher, shall be charged to the

school's local funds or MOOE. Subject to availability of funds, travel expenses of

learners to Work Immersion venue will also be charged to MOOE and other funds,

the details of which shall be provided in a separate set of Guidelines. Expenses for

Immersion Venue rental, utilities, and/or other direct or incidental expenses of the

Partner Institution shall not be allowed.

10. Schools and students shall not be asked to pay the 5115 Partner Institution for

any Work Immersion activity conducted. Fees for Work Immersion must only be set

after consultation with parents.

WORK IMMERSION LEARNING’S

Clueless, nervous, and innocent on the new environment that we will enter. The

environment where everyone cannot even think to have night outs and parties. An

environment that will make you think for your future.

The day came when we will be oriented on what are the do’s and don’ts? What

are the only place where we should we enter and not? Who are the people that will be

responsible or will guide us in the run of work immersion? And of course they did not

forget to introduce the company and also its personnel’s. They also ask our strengths

and weaknesses. Probably to know what the activities are applicable to develop our

abilities and acquired skills, for us to be more globally competitive in the near future.

At first everything is new, we are still cautious on what we are doing, alert if there

will be tasks given and being observant on how the work is done by employees. But

with the help of the people in the company, these thoughts were trashed. We are

advised to enjoy the whole work immersion and also know are limitation.

At the run of work immersion we learn new things such as: we already knew on

what is the content and to make a marketing plan, know how to market a rising product,

know how to gain sales just by the use of social media sites, know how to socialize with

co-workers effectively, we also learn on how to be punctual and clean the mess we

made as we go, we are also thought on how to open a box within one second, but as a

38

Downloaded by Juliana Nery (julianamercadonery@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20918942

newbie we are still working on it, and also know how to do the payroll system, know

some of the rules in accounting, know the importance of being late for more than 5

minutes and also the most important part are the tips that imparted by the board of the

directors to us after we present the marketing plan we have done as a group and also

the confidence that is already build to our hearts to stand up in front of people. That truly

help us in other presentations we have done.

This work immersion did not just give us knowledge about how company work,

on how we can develop our skills and knowledge, but also it impart us some lessons

that we will apply in our daily life, the relationship that we build with our co- workers, the

love, the care, the guidance, the joy and also the appreciations that they give on the

things we done.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

There is no such thing as perfect, everything or everyone has its own flaws, but

identifying its imperfections can be its own strength, because they can address these

problems with proper solution. Here are the problems that the trainees observed:

 THE TIME MANAGEMENT: Every time they set a schedule for the new task it

will be postponed, and continuously until the task will be forgotten.

 THE INFORMATION: Our knowledge about the company is very minimal, and

we expect that we can get some information in the internet, but as not what we

expected, just like out knowledge it is also minimal.

 THE CONTACT: The people that we have concerned with have a really busy life,

the fact that we do not have contacts with them and it is not necessary to send

some private message in messenger because they do not have time for such

things.

40

Downloaded by Juliana Nery (julianamercadonery@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20918942

SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

These suggestion and recommendation are based on the problems that the

trainee observed.

 Set a schedule for the activities that the trainees will do for the whole work

immersion. So even you are not around you can assign someone to give the

activities to the trainees

 Have a proper website where the customer can have inquiries other than the

Facebook pages and can see what the company does.

 Engage more in social media sites because your target markets have access in

different social media and it is the easiest platform to use in marketing.

 Have a reserved contact number for public use, that can be disseminated to

anyone even though it is not business related.
