PRINCIPLE 2 : NEUTRALITY OF THE THIRD PLACE

• The third place should be a neutral environment that allows everyone from the community to enjoy its services.
• It should not be biased against a certain demographic or income group. This is to allow integration of society and exchange of ideas.

ANALYSIS IN BAHATI
• Third places like bars in bahati do not cater for women and children especially after hours. This is largely do to culture and lack of security.
• The parks are mainly occupied by children as children playgrounds

PROPOSED DESIGN
• Introduction of tea houses and womens clubs
• Promenade along the river to alow for adults to take walks
• Open spaces within clusters

PRINCIPLE 3 : LOCATION OF THE THIRD PLACE

• The type of third place is solely dependent on the place it is

located. For example, a tavern/bar cannot be located next
to a school or church, however it makes sense for it to be
located in the commercial district.
• They should also be located where a lot of activity can take
place.
ANALYSIS IN BAHATI
• Existing third places are mostly located along the major roads to
increase income by utilizing the foot traffic.
• As can be seen bars are located along the commercial zones of
bahati
• It is convenient to locate them within residentials as they cater to
mostly men. It will raise a question of insecurity

PROPOSED DESIGN
• Introduce a variety of third places like eateries apart from bars
esp in MUDS
• These spaces should be turned inward to better cater for all
residents
• They will also increase security of the inner lanes
