Topic 1
Electrical Machines-An Overview

Fundamental principles
An electromagnetic machine links an electrical energy system such as a supply network to a mechanical
one such as a prime mover or mechanical load. Such a machine is normally referred as a rotating electrical
machine. On the other hand, a static electromagnetic machine is a link between two electrical energy
systems of different voltage levels and it is referred as a static electrical machine.

Elements of electromagnetic machines

Major elements of a rotating machine are (i) a system to set up the required magnetic flux and (ii) the
armature winding to get emf induced across it or to take current through it from the supply when operated as
a generator or a motor respectively.

DC armature winding (Commutator winding)
Double layer winding
Lap winding
