B. THE HEATING CURVE OF AN UNKNOWN CHEMICAL.
Gas
Phase Change
Boiling
Liquid
Phase Change
Melting
Solid
By answering the questions below, you will think about what is happening at those labeled
points and what they can tell us in terms of particle behavior.
1. Label the sections on the graph where the substance is a solid, liquid and a gas?
2. Describe what is happening between each of the points:
i. A-B? Unknown chemical is being heated.
ii. B-C? Unknown chemical is melting.
iii. C-D? Unknown chemical is being heated again.
iv. D-E? Unknown chemical reaches boiling point.
v. E-F? Unknown chemical vaporizes into gas.
3. Describe the way that the particles are arranged and behaving between A-B,
what happens to them between points B-C and what they are like after point C?
Between A-C, the unknown chemical is being heated, so the atoms and molecules vibrate faster. As it
vibrates, the spaces between them increases. During point B-C, a phase change is occurring. Meaning the
unknown chemical is turning from solid to liquid, breaking bonds within the process. After point C, the
particles relaxes into a stable form of liquid and the molecular arrangement becomes random or fills
the container moving around each other.
