LEADERSHIP AWARD

CRITERIA AND GUIDE QUESTIONS

A. MOTIVATIONAL SKILLS (30%)

A1. Communicates effectively

(In what ways did you practice effective communication in leading your
class/club?)

- In every important task or activity given to us, I practice my effective

communication skills by being a good listener and active speaker or
communicator at the same time. I participate in brainstorming discussions,
suggest clear and concise ideas, set expectations, exchange honest
feedback, fulfill my duties and roles, and pay attention to others’ opinions
as well. I always consider the perspectives of other people and the best
options but never lose the initiative to lead the group toward success. At
last, I believe that effective communication is vital that leaders must not
only possess but also the members as a whole to gain trust, thus, aligning all
efforts in the pursuit of our goals and promotion of positive outcomes.

A2. Shows initiative and responsibility

(What are some instances in which you have shown initiative and
responsibility?)

- Since I was young, my parents had already taught me how to do things on

my own and solve problems independently. So, I often took pride in my
work and voice out my personal thoughts when needed. For instance, I
take responsibility for assigning individual tasks and representing groups if
there are group activities and no one wants or takes the courage to do so.
Thus, I find opportunities for improvement, plan techniques in advance,
anticipate questions, and prepare answers. Simply put, I do not wait for
someone to tell me what to do. I accomplish tasks beyond what was asked
on a project and it is my duty as a leader to take responsibility for everything
beneficial or unfavorable that happens in the group. Plus, I tend to be
proactive rather than reactive, which makes me seem versatile
and confident most of the time. I have a strong urge to help my teams and
organizations to meet the standards, innovate, develop, and overcome
any obstacle.

• A3. Engages groups and/or clubmates to participate actively

(How did you motivate/engage your groups and/or clubmates to
participate actively in club/school activities?)

- I encourage my groups or clubmates to see the brighter side of the

challenges placed before us, step outside of their comfort zones as well as
use and take advantage of their potentials to contribute. I also
persuade them to approach their responsibilities with high hopes and
complete enthusiasm and to look forward to the possible favorable results
that we may achieve if we will work hard together, cooperate, and make
the most of our time to finish the jobs effectively. I leave no one behind,
appreciate their efforts, and I do not pressure them to comply but instead,
motivate them to commit themselves fully to reaching our goals.

• A4. Establishes a collaborative relationship

(How did you establish and nurture the collaborative relationship in your
class and/or club? How is the idea of the “Me to We” principle observed
in your class and/or club?

- To establish and nurture a collaborative relationship, I always ensure to

observe two-way communication during classes or club meetings. I am
able to express my feelings freely while I collaborate with the people I enjoy
working with and even those with whom I do not usually talk to. This kind of
relationship depends on members working together as a team and sharing
the responsibility of achieving objectives. Therefore, I make sure to get
everyone on the same page. Sometimes, I also incorporate fun and
learning to ease the tension and avoid awkwardness as we explain
concepts thoroughly to each other. The basic way to implement the
golden rule is to be intentional about how we choose to act and to treat
other people the way that we would want to be treated ourselves. Hence,
the key is to understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. In order
for the group to practice the “Me to We” principle, we should be mature
enough to think that what we do and how we respond can impact the
progress of the group by putting ourselves in the shoes of others.

• A5. Resolves conflicts

(Cite instances in which conflict resolution or settling of disputes was
practiced)

- There are some instances wherein my classmates fight over trivial matters
due to misunderstandings and conflicts of different attitudes. In situations
like these, first, I listen to both sides of the argument before commenting or
giving reactions. After they have calmed down a bit, I will now bring up the
concern to our adviser or any teacher available in class to finally settle the
dispute. If the discordance between the two has not yet been resolved, I
try to put them in a room where they can openly discuss about what went
wrong and I allow them to release their grudges against each other and
learn to forgive until they realize the value of their friendship once more.
Normally, an excellent method for such cases is not to blame anyone, give
each other spaces to reflect, and deeply talk it all through at the right time.

B2. Implements planned activities effectively and efficiently

(How did you ensure the effective and efficient implementation of your
planned activities?)
- One characteristic that I like about myself is having the ability to logically
organize my timeline or schedule and make time for each of my tasks but
also knowing when I am unable to complete anymore within a particular
period because I am a detail-oriented person. In planning activities, I
prioritize the toughest tasks above the easiest ones to process a smooth
flow of production and prevent myself from procrastinating. I also map out
risks and execute strategic plans for any unexpected complications. I
monitor my performance regularly and provide continuous support. In my
view, we should master and start with efficient and realistic planning before
implementing the activities since it helps us to be accountable for what we
do and decide how best to use our resources. Once I am sensibly aware
and ready to implement the tasks, I proceed on following the step-by-step
process tactically based on my plan and stay optimistic as the old maxim
goes, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

B3. Monitors implementation of plans and tasks

(What scheme did you employ to monitor the effective implementation of
your plans and tasks?)

- To illustrate and give an example scenario, I monitor my weak points and

improvements in all subjects before, during, and after the quarterly
assessment week. I delegate the work to my fellow groupmates if necessary
and ask for updates or reports regarding their work in progress on regular
bases. I refine the projects as we move along to mitigate threats. From initial
drafts to our final outputs, I guide myself in implementing the activities with
a to-do checklist, study calendar, and “Things to Remember” note on my
phone just to be certain that everything is going on the right track and
progressing as planned.

B4. Manages and/or uses resources wisely

(In what ways did you manage and/or use resources wisely?)
- An example demonstration of managing resources wisely is when we are
doing art projects. It has become a habit of mine to utilize alternative or
oftentimes recycled materials in crafting artwork not only because it is an
academic requirement and part of the subject’s criteria but also because
we aim to preserve our environment. I also maximize the use of our
instructional materials including books, online modules, and gadgets for
education and research. When we were assigned to build the learning hub
for Senior High School students, we spent our budget wisely and did not
waste cents on useless things. I find ways to allocate where I can save and
use my resources so that at the end of the day, we will be able to boost
opportunities and explore quick and clever methods to conquer difficulties
through our creative thinking skills, resourcefulness, and inventiveness.

C. CONTRIBUTION TO THE SCHOOL AND/OR COMMUNITY (20%)

C1. Renders service and/or implement activities to the school population

and/or community

(What services/activities have you rendered /implemented that are relevant to

the school population and/or community?

- As far as I remember, the services I rendered that are relevant to our school
community are mostly written files or papers supporting the programs of
Saint Joseph School such as the articles from the recently reformed
organization of SJS Advocate (School Paper), scripts, and project proposals
with the Grade 12 - Core Group, various performances, and many other
interactive exercises. I have already served as a seminar facilitator and
speaker and generated a promotional video for the ABM strand of the
Senior High School Department. As mentioned above, I also contributed to
the planning, construction, operations, and development of the learning
hub located on the third floor of the high school building and a lot more.

D. MODEL OF VALUES (20%)

D1. Upholds the values expected of a Josephian

(In implementing your tasks/activities, how did you manifest/practice the core
values of a Josephian?)

- I have been studying at Saint Joseph School for almost fourteen years now.
I have spent more than half of my life in school and I can say that being a
Josephian is not just a simple title or identity but a substantial privilege in
manifold aspects. They have molded me into the person I am today with
the core values instilled in me including the virtue of discipline that
Josephians are best known for.

SERVICE – I can be of good service to others by offering a helping hand,

volunteering my time, energy, and sense of well-being to school and helping
address our community's needs. Leadership means service for me, not a position.
I foster other-centered leadership and as someone with a call to lead, I transform
my skills and knowledge into purposeful movements.

WISDOM – By learning as much as I can, contemplating upon my experiences,

and putting my knowledge to the test, I practice wisdom and can become a
wiser individual and leader. Moreso, manifesting wisdom is also sharing it with
others and showing empathy which plays a significant role to grow the roots of
my knowledge about what is good, right, or best given a particular set of
circumstances, especially when it comes to abiding by the rules and limitations. I
apply and integrate what I have learned from the high-quality education offered
at SJS.

INTEGRITY – I fulfill my tasks in all honesty even when no one is watching and with
or without recognition and rewards. I am a person of my word, and I refrain from
making promises I know I cannot keep. If I make a mistake, I admit it right away
and do whatever it takes to put things right. I always credit other people's work,
uphold academic integrity and avoid violations like cheating, plagiarism, and
academic dishonesty. Furthermore, I pursue scholarly activities in an honest and
responsible manner.
TRUST - The value of trust is a very crucial instrument in group activities. Thus, I give
and earn trust by investing time in personally knowing others and committing
myself to healthy relationships with my classmates, teachers, and other
individuals. However, above all else, I started building trust within myself. I first
discovered my personal values, boundaries, and skills to remind myself of what is
really important to me which is self-assurance. Little by little, I am learning to
consistently stay true to myself because at its very core, trusting myself implies
being hopeful to survive life for whatever is coming ahead of me.

COMPASSION – I am willing to help my classmates and other schoolmates, even

the faculty teachers and staff of SJS to have a shoulder they can lean on, carry
out their roles and make the school a better learning community. In addition, I
can model kindness and emotional intelligence and carefully comprehend the
shortcomings of others without judgment. Ultimately, I practice resilience toward
personal distress. With the combination of compassion and good leadership skills,
I can lead from the head and the heart.

HARMONY – I promote the value of harmony by establishing strong “family-like”

connections with my groupmates and schoolmates. This is essential to forming a
positive learning environment in which the students can be motivated, engaged,
focused, and feel safe. Hence, in this manner, our team can get along well and
works as a cohesive, collaborative, and united group. We achieve mutually
beneficial goals and enjoy each other’s presence as well as every moment of our
journey together here in school.
