A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS ON CITRUS × MICROCARPA (CALAMANSI), AND

CITRUS × AURANTIIFOLIA (LIME) AS AN INGREDIENTS FOR ANTIBACTERIAL

DISINFECTANT

INTRODUCTION

Citrus fruits are common household ingredients when disinfecting surfaces to kill
pathogens that cause diseases. In this research, researchers will tackle the effectiveness of citrus
fruits such as calamansi and lime as ingredients for disinfectant. Citrus antibacterial spray is a
convenient type of cleaning agent, and for its low price, there are numerous benefits using citrus
disinfectants. Aside from its convenience, citrus is completely safer to use than disinfectants with
chemical substances in them. “Citrus fruits are also known to contain bioactive compounds such
as phenolics, flavonoids, vitamins, and essential oils which are believed to be responsible for a
range of protective health benefits including antioxidative, anti‐inflammatory, antitumor, and
antimicrobial activities” (Aruoma et al. 2012; Karimi et al. 2012).

BG OF THE STUDY

All extracts, particularly calamansi, were effective against the test organisms, with a
zone of inhibition of 41.3 mm against Klebsiella pneumoniae and 35.3 mm against Salmonella
typhi. slaked lime, has traditionally been used as a disinfectant to avoid infectious diseases in
livestock. These citruses will go under investigation to prove what is the best ingredient for
disinfectant. It is important to determine which citrus fruits will be more effective under different
conditions.

SOP

The researchers will conduct this study to know the difference between calamansi and
lime with to their opinion and views about the topic. These questions aim to collect the thought
of the respondents.

a) Which is more effective, calamansi or lime?

b) How will it benefit the people?
c) Did you use any harmful chemicals when creating this product?
RESEARCH DESIGN

This research will use both comparative and experimental methods. Since the purpose of
this study is to compare the perceptions of two distinct citrus and to see if the product is really
effective. This approach will enable the researchers to gather a variety of data that will be useful
in this research.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The researchers will use a simple random sampling technique and will draw samples
from the Grade 12 students of FEU Diliman. Given the population size of 214, the sample size is
therefore 150 dues to the application of Slovin’s formula. Thenceforth, respondents will be
randomly selected. In this sampling method, bias will be omitted and avoided. Moreover, the
chances of manipulating the data are lessened.

DATA COLLECTION

The researchers will use observation and survey method as the main tool for data
collection. The survey will be use to collect different opinions and views about Citrus ×
microcarpa (calamansi), and Citrus × aurantiifolia (lime) as an ingredient for antibacterial
disinfectant. The survey comprises several aspects that may impact the product. The product will
be evaluated by the respondents based on its efficacy, fragrance, and appearance. In order to
allay any worries that respondents may have when responding, the respondents name will be
kept confidential. The researchers can fully respond to the study topic using these techniques and
the data they will provide.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study will only suggest comparative aspects of the variables. In this case, the
qualities and effectiveness of each citrus fruit will be studied. Only FEU Diliman Grade 12
students are involved in this experiment.
