RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Introduction and Rationale

Fruits and vegetable peels are a waste that is often ignored by the community. It can be seen
everywhere in a public market in the Philippines. While a lot of people see these peels as
trash, the researchers want to conduct an experiment to explore if they could formulate
Banana (Musa paradisiaca Linn), Orange (Citrus sinensis), and Potato (Solanum tuberosum)
peel into a facial wash.

Literature Review

Wastes from banana, orange, and potato peels pose increasing disposal and pollution
problems as they represent a large fraction of the fruit and vegetable. The researchers thought
that the way to address this concern is to convert these wastes into high-value product. The
objective of this experimental study is to explore the potential formulation of banana, orange,
and potato peel into facial wash.

According to Collins English Dictionary, a facial wash is a beauty product which cleanses the

skin of the face. Cleaning your face should be an integral part of your skin care routine.
Cleansing helps remove excess oil, makeup, sweat, dirt and dead skin cells from your skin.
It refreshes your skin and gives your complexion a chance to breathe.

Many facial washes have a chemical ingredient. This kind of facial wash is known as
artificial facial wash. It contains ingredients like Parabens, Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)

Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), and Propylene glycol that had been linked to adverse health
effects. Parabens were developed to kill mold and bacteria, but they've been linked to breast
cancer due to their estrogen-mimicking properties, Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium
laureth sulfate (SLES) are surfactants, which means they're responsible for sudsing and
foaming. SLS and SLES are widely known to irritate skin and lungs as well as interact poorly
with other chemicals, while Propylene glycol, a skin-softening agent, is said to cause
dermatitis and allergic reactions in skin.
While facial wash is important for our skin, not everyone can afford to buy it. In doing this
research, the researchers will not only help in mitigating the fruits and vegetable peels
wastes but also make an affordable and safer facial wash.

Research Questions

In general, the goal of this research is to make use of the wastes that the community often
ignores and convert it into a high-value product and provide a more budget-friendly and safe
facial wash that can be easily made at home. Additionally, this study aims to measure the
physical stability of the formulation of banana, orange, and potato peel into a facial wash.

1. Is this facial wash cheaper than the facial washes that can be bought on the market?
2. Is this facial wash safer to use than the artificial facial washes?
3. Is this facial wash attainable and can be easily made at home?
4. How long does this facial wash last?

Scope and Limitation

This study aims to help the community lessen the wastes from fruits and vegetables. It also
provides a more affordable and safer facial wash for everyone. Additionally, the researchers
want to measure the physical stability of this product in different temperatures. It will be
measured by storing the facial wash into different temperatures; room temperature, under the
sun, and inside the freezer.

Research Methodology

A. Sampling

The researchers will be conduct an experiment on the potency of the formulation of the
banana, orange, and potato peel facial wash by applying a small portion of it on the tester’s
arm. After washing it, the skin should feel clean, nourished, soft, and smooth. It should
remove the dirt and makeups without having to scrub it off. This facial wash can be handed
out to the respondents so they can test its potency.
To test the facial wash’s physical stability, it should be stored in three different temperatures;
At room temperature, under the sun and inside the freezer. The facial wash will be stored for
one-seven days at these three different temperature to know how long it will last.

The respondents in this research will be the residents of Olivarez Homes South Biñan City
Laguna. The number of respondents will be a maximum of 20-25 people. The said
participants should be 16 and above and with parental consent. The respondents will be given
a sample of a product to try on and a questionnaire that will serve as a feedback for the
product. They will be asked for consent to use their feedback for this research study.

B. Data Collection

The researchers of this study will follow some procedures in order for them to achieve the
objectives of this work. First, they will prepare a questionnaire and present it to the target
respondents personally with the permission if they are allowing them to be part of the
research study. Prior to that, they will explain to the respondents what the study is about and
what its primary objective is. The responses will be used as a guide.

C. Ethical Issues

The main problem that the researchers might encounter in this study is finding a respondent
that is willing to try this product. The residents of the said subdivision might not agree in
taking part of this research due to the product being a facial wash. The researchers would
guarantee the anonymity of the respondents who chose to take part of this research. With this
being said, the researchers will refrain from asking the names of the respondents.

D. Plan for Data Analysis

The experimental instrument was applied in this research. The type of experimentation
conducted by researchers is defined as "pure science," and it consists simply of
experimenting and observing. Experiments will be performed to evaluate the quality of both
products as part of the experimentation process. The validity of this study will be determined
by the results of repeatable experiments to see if data collected is reliable and consistent.
