Abstract
Pomelo has lots of benefits and it took interest to the researchers if its rind can also benefit the
people. The purpose of this study is finding a natural ingredient that is effective to lighten the scars
and spots. The researchers tested and experimented its effectiveness so that everyone with scars or
spots will benefit to this study. In order to make this study possible, there is a question asked: Is
Pomelo Rind used as scars and spots lightening effective? The researchers have hypotheses; null
and alternative. The approach in this study is experimental. The experiment was conducted for 2
weeks on three types of scar with different time it was developed: keloid scar, dark spots, and flat
scar. All of the scars have lightened and encountered different effects throughout the time frame
for experimentation. It has been observed that the results can be affected due to how recent the scar
or spot is. The older the scar is, the less effectivity can be seen. The researchers recommend pomelo
rind can be a great alternative to commercial scar lighteners to reduce or remove scars and spots
naturally. It is recommended to apply the pomelo rind if the scar is still fresh. Results may also
vary of how old the scar is. It is also recommended to keep applying the process continuously for
better results. The status of the study is open, everyone can restudy this and also get different results.

CHAPTER 1
Introduction and Its Background
Introduction and Background of the Study
Pomelo, scientifically termed Citrus maxima or Citrus grandis, is a large Asian citrus fruit
which is closely related to a grapefruit. Its shape is like a teardrop and has a green or yellow flesh
and a thick, pale rind. It can grow to the size of a cantaloupe or to a larger size. Pomelo is the largest
fruit of all the citrus varieties belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is commonly called as “suha”
in Filipino. This fruit provides vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, calcium, iron, zinc and
copper, and dietary fibers. Pomelo also contains amino acids and antioxidants. This fruit also offers
anti-ageing benefits because of spermidine. A pomelo rind can be used as a medical bandage for
wounds. It can also be used to suppress any redness and swelling that helps diminish acne and
pimples and lessen skin irritation.
Pomelo has proven a lot of health benefits. From boosting our immune system, to
maintaining our heart health; from relaxing muscle cramps, to fortifying bones; truly, pomelo works
wonders to our body. In this study, the researchers want to know if its rind can be used to lighten
scars. Pomelo is proven to have a lot of health benefits and it is an interesting matter if its rind can
be used for physiological cure for lightening scars. In conducting this study, the researchers will
know if pomelo rind is effective as scar and spot lightener. It will be beneficial especially that scars
and spots take a long time to fade. The researchers wanted to study this topic to help others in
dealing with their insecurities such as scars. This will be also a partial fulfilment to their subject.
More so, the researchers want to know the effectiveness of pomelo rind as a scar and spots lightener.
Statement of the Problem
The researchers would like to address the specific question:

Is Pomelo Rind used as scars and spots lightening effective?
Formulation of the Hypothesis
In order to answer the question, the researchers formulated the following hypotheses:
Null:
Pomelo Rind used as scars and spots lightening is not effective.
Alternative:
Pomelo Rind used as scars and spots lightening is effective.
Significance of the Study
The significance of this study is finding the natural ingredient needed to lighten the scars
and spots. The researchers will test and experiment its effectiveness so that everyone with scars or
spots will benefit to this study.
Teachers. The teachers will have the advantage from this study since they can provide
more information that can help them in teaching their lessons especially about the health benefits
of a pomelo, specifically its rind used as scars and spots lightening.
Students. The students will benefit from this study, they could learn this knowledge and
information and can be used when its relevant to their current academic lesson. Also, as they go by
their puberty stage, they will learn a specific solution to lighten their scars and spots.

Parents. The parents will benefit from this study the particular reason for this circumstance
is for their children. Whenever their child gets a scar or spot, parents could utilize this study to find
a cure for them.
Scope and Limitation
The researchers’ focus is the effectiveness of pomelo rind used as scars and spots lightening
that will be helpful in conducting and proving the study. The study will be conducted to every
researcher of the group inside their homes amidst pandemic. There will be influences that cannot
be controlled by the researchers like skin allergies or any allergic reactions that will be obtained
from the pomelo rind by the researchers. This study will be conducted for 2 weeks to see the
negative, positive, and possible results. The budget allotted for this study will be Php 100-500.
Definition of Terms
These are some vocabularies used in the study for deeper understanding:
1) Pomelo - A large pear-shaped citrus fruit differing from the closely related grapefruit
especially in its loose rind and often coarse dry pulp
2) Rind - A thick and firm outer coat or covering, as of certain fruits, cheese, and meats.
3) Scars – A mark remaining on the skin after injured tissue has healed.
4) Spots – An area marred or marked by dirt.
5) Lightening - Is the practice of using chemical substances in an attempt to lighten the skin
or provide an even skin color by reducing the melanin concentration in the skin.

6) Rutaceae – A family of herbs, shrubs, and tress (order Geraniales) often glandular and
strong scented and having flowers that are tetramerous or pentamerous with a compound
ovary of four or five distinct or somewhat united carpels.
CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature
This chapter presents the related literature after the thorough and in-depth search done by
the researchers. This will present as a reference to fully understand the study to be done and this
chapter includes the purpose of the literature review. Its purpose was to describe the effectiveness
of pomelo rind used as scars and spots lightening from different literature sources and writers.
Related Literature
According to Dan Brennan, MD (2020), pomelo is rich in antioxidants. Pomelo is high in
vitamin C, a potent antioxidant as well as several other antioxidant compounds. Naringenin and
naringin are the main antioxidants found in pomelos and are often found in citrus fruits. Antioxidant
lycopene is also found in pomelo. Lycopene is anti-inflammatory that helps reduce redness and is
also commonly found in tomatoes.
As stated by netmeds.com (2020), pomelo contains several essential amino acids that help
build healthy skin cells and also suppress any redness and swelling that tends to develop on the
skin that is exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Its high flavonoid content provides
antioxidant traits to help fight free radical damage, reduce acne, scars and dark spots, and reduce
skin irritation.
In a research study by Zhao YL et al. (2019), pomelo rind or peel is often discarded after
consumption in most cases. The chemical constituents and biological activities present at the fruit
rind have not been validated before. In evaluating, the chemical and pharmacological profile of
coumarins from peels of pomelo are used against inflammation.


In an article from Nature’s Answer (2020), pomelo helps to get rid of acne, scars and dark
spots on skin, giving the face a vibrant, youthful and soft appearance. Moreover, vitamin C and
protein values in pomelo being very high, it bolsters collagen synthesis and repairs any damage to
the body. The vitamin C is necessary for the health of the immune system.
In an article from FloralBeautySpot (2021), Pomelo reduces the appearances of spots and
scars: this fruit has a high content of vitamin C which is an antioxidant that protects the skin from
free radicals and discoloration issues. Its ability to inhibit the production of melanin allows scars
and spots to heal without significant change in skin color. The peels are used to produce pomelo
essential oil through cold pressing.
CHAPTER 3

Methodology
The methodology of the study shows the step-by-step procedures of the experimentation
conducted by the researchers. On the methodology, shows the materials that the researchers have
used for the study.
Materials Needed:
1) Pomelo
2) Cling wrap/Plastic wrap
3) Chopping board
4) Knife
5) Towel (optional)
Procedures:
Product:
1) Wash the pomelo thoroughly and dry it with a towel or airdry it.
2) Get the chopping board and slice the pomelo with knife. Peel the pomelo and keep its
rind.
3) Get cling wrap or plastic wrap and wrap the pomelo rind with it.
4) Refrigerate for storage to last a long time.
Application:
1) Rub the pomelo rind for 5 minutes. It should be two times a day (morning and night).
2) Repeat the process for 2 weeks.


CHAPTER 4
Results and Discussion
This chapter presents the results and analysis of the study that the researchers have
gathered. The data gathered will be presented in tables indicating photos, short description, date
and time the product applied, and short observations. The latter will be followed by the analysis
and interpretation of data.

Presentation is a way of arranging data into logical, chronological and significant

Table 1 presents the keloid scar. The scar developed last February 2020 on the right knee
of the subject. It is presented that the scar is much flatter than before with smoother appearance and
lighter color. The edges of the scar are much lighter on the last day than the first day.

CHAPTER 5
Generalization and Recommendation
This chapter presents the conclusion and recommendation of the study based on the
analysis and observations from the previous chapter.
Conclusion
The researchers did this experiment to know if the rind of pomelo can be used as scars and
spots lightening to prove the study. The researchers find out that this pomelo rind can help lighten

the scars and spots on the skin, and giving a vibrant and soft appearance. The product making turned
successful.
Pomelo is proven to have a lot of health benefits and it is an interesting matter if its rind
can be used for a physiological cure for lightening scars and spots. The experiment turned out to
be successful that proves the whole study. It became beneficial especially that scars and spots take
a long time to fade.
In order to test the effectivity of the pomelo rind, the method has been applied into three
types of scars and spots: keloid scar (February 2020), dark spots (recent), and flat scar (December
2020). These scars are placed in the different parts of the body. The pomelo rind is used to the
researchers as test subjects and rub it on their skin that has scars and spots to prove its effectivity.
The researchers applied the pomelo rind for 5 minutes in morning and night. This has been the
cycle for 14 days (2 weeks).
The keloid scar not only lightened a bit from the given time span but also flattened. During
the days the pomelo rind has been applied, sometimes there are itchiness and redness. The dark
spots that came from pimples also lightened and majority are removed. The flat scar as well
lightened and also got thinner in a range of 14 days yet even now it has clear visibility.
It has been observed that the results can be affected due to how recent the scar or spot is.
Nevertheless, the experiment turned out to be successful. The components of pomelo rind can be
an ingredient for scars and spots lightening. The results of this study indicate that this pomelo rind
has potential absorption capacity for scars and spots lightening which can be used as an effective
lightening agent.

Recommendation
The researchers would like to concede that conducting the study took some effort.
There are many ways to gain negative and positive feedback towards the study. It took a hefty
duration of time to conclude this study.
The researchers recommend pomelo rind can be a great alternative to commercial
scar lighteners to reduce or remove scars and spots naturally. It moisturizes the skin and helps skin
tissue repair itself. It is also recommended to apply the pomelo rind if the scar is still fresh. Results
may also vary of how old the scar is. It is also recommended to keep applying the process
continuously for better results.
The researchers would like to recommend to the other students creating
investigatory projects that no matter how much effort it requires to execute the study, if there is
trust in between the group, the research will succeed. Parents should support and guide their
children willingly because it will inspire them to produce their best work. The faculty can supply
bits and pieces of information to their students to help broaden their knowledge about a certain
topic. The status of the study is open, everyone can restudy this and also get different results.
