MAKER SPACE EXERCISES

1. BANDSAW
Cutting material to length using a vertical bandsaw
A. Measuring and marking
i. Mark material to cut to desired length using tape measure and speed square.
ii. Double check marking for desired measurement and to avoid errors in the
measuring process.

B. Cut material.
i. Place marked material on table.
ii. Ensure upper blade guide is in the desired position for the material height.
iii. While holding material securely, turn on the bandsaw.
iv. Using the material guide to hold the material square, begin moving the material
toward the blade and begin cutting.
v. With both hands, follow the marked line when cutting material, using only
enough pressure for the blade to cut.
vi. When the blade has passed entirely through the material, turn off the bandsaw,
be sure to avoid contacting fingers or other body parts from the blade.
2. DRILL PRESS
Drilling, boring, and counter boring of the material.
i. Mark the center of the material using a measuring tape and speed square.
ii. Remeasure marking to ensure it is marked appropriately.
iii. Secure the material, with the 1/8 in. drill bit lined up on the center marking.
iv. Turn on the drill press.
v. With 1/8 in. drill bit, drill a hole all the way through the material on the center
mark.

vi. Turn off the drill press.

vii. Remove material from the vise and replace the 1/8 in. drill bit with the ¼ in.
drill bit.
viii. Reinstall the material in the vise, be sure to align the ¼ in. drill bit on the 1/8 in.
hole that was drilled.
ix. Turn on the drill press.
x. Bore a ¼ in. hole directly through the 1/8 in. hole on the material.

xi. Turn off the drill press.

2
xii. Remove the material from the vise.
xiii. Remove the ¼ in. drill bit from the chuck using the chuck key and replace it with
the 3/8 in. drill bit.
xiv. Set the drill stop for the drill press to only drill halfway through the material.

xv. Reinstall the material in the vise and secure it so the drill bit is centered on the
previously bored hole.
xvi. Turn on the drill press.
xvii. Drill halfway through the material to create a counter bore in the material.

xviii. Turn off the drill press and remove material from the vise.

3. ROUTING
Shaping material around the edge of the material.
1. Secure material in a vise on the worktable so it is as level as possible.
2. Ensure router is in the off position.
3. Plug the router into the power source.

3
4. With the router securely in the operator’s hands, turn the router on.
5. With the Base lying flat on the material, begin routing the edge closest
to the operator, moving to the left from the right corner closest to the
operator.

6. Route around the edge of the material in a clockwise motion, keeping

the base flat on the materials top side.
7. Once the material has been routed around the entire edge, turn off the
router and wait for the spindle to stop moving before placing it on the
worktable.

8. Unplug the router and remove material from the vise.
