Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Basic Calculus for Grade 12

I. Objective:
At the end of a sixty-minute period, learners will be able
to evaluate the limit of algebraic functions (polynomial, rational,
and radical) using the basic limit theorems.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Limits of Algebraic Functions
Reference: Basic Calculus Teaching Guide,
Advance Mathematical Concepts by Glencoe
Code: STEM_BC11LC-IIIa-4
Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, Manila Paper, pentel pen

III. Procedure:
A. Preliminaries: Prayer, Greetings, Checking of attendance
B. Review: Basic theorems on limits.
C. Motivation: “ANAGRAM GAMES” through powerpoint
presentation.

D. Lesson proper.
1. Presentation of the topic and the objective.
2. Start the topic by giving problems involving finding limits
of the functions through table of values and graphing.
3. Present some algebraic functions (polynomial, rational,
and radical). Guide the leaners in finding the limits of
these functions through applying different basic limit
theorems/laws.
4. Group Activity: Divide the class into 4 groups and give
them problems about finding limits of the functions using
different basic limit theorems.

Group 1:
a) lim ❑(2 x +1) b) lim ❑(3 x 4−2 x−1)
x →1 x →0

Group 2:
1−5 x √ 2 x +5
a)lim ❑ b)lim ❑
x →1 1+3 x2 + 4 x 4 x →2 1−3 x

Group 3:
lim ❑(2 x3 −4 x 2 +1)
a) x→−1 b) lim ❑ √ x +4
x →0
Group 4:
2
x2 – 4 x +2 x−3
a) lim ❑ b) lim ❑ 2
x →2 x−2 x →1 x −3 x+2

5. Drills: Provide another algebraic function which are more

difficult to enhance the higher order thinking skills
(HOTS) of the learners in finding limits of the functions.
E. Generalization: Let the learners generalize the lesson through
question and answer.
F. Integration: Inculcate to the learners the importance of limit in
real life.

IV. Evaluation:

Evaluate the limit of the following algebraic functions using

the basic limit laws in

1. f(x)= 2x2 -3x +5

1. h(x)= -x3 -2x2 + 3x + 6
2. f(x)= 7x - 5
3. g(x)= 2x-5 + 2x
4. f(x)= 3x7

V. Assignment:
A. Differentiate the following functions:
3 1
1. g(x)= 2 + 4
x x

2. f(x)= 3x7 + 3x-3

B. Advance study on “Product Rule and Quotient Rule” in finding

derivative.
