DENSITY

l The density  of subtances is defined as mass per unit

volume of a sample of the subtance. That is, if a small
mass element m occupies of a volume V, the density
given by
m

V
l In general, the density an object dependes on position, so
that  is a function of x, y and z [ (x, y,z) ]. If the object
mass M and volume V is homogeneous, the density given
by

M
 
V

PRESSURE
l The magnitude of the normal force per unit surface area is
called the pressure. Pressure is a scalar quantity, it has no
directional properties.
l The force F exerted by the fluid againts the suface A
depends on the pressure p according to
F = p A
l Since the vector representating the force and the area are
parallel, we can write the pressure in terms of the scalar
relationship.

A U-tube, in which both ends are

open to the athmosphere, is
partly filled with water. Oil, which
does not mix with water, is
poured into one side until it
stands a distance d = 12,3 mm
above the water level on the
other side, which has meanwhile
risen a distance a = 67,5 mm
from its original level. Find the
density of the oil!
