For e.g., ASME 31.3, latest edition is 2022, whereas referred standards are of edition 2012 and
2020.
Stantec For DN1200, PN25, wall thickness of 22.5 deg elbow is selected as 15.09. Please clarify
2. the reference document from where this thickness is selected.
As per ASME36.10, standard available wall thickness for DN1200 pipe next to 14.27
mm is 15.88mm.

Stantec It is noted that, in this calculation, fitting material grade is stated as ASTM A516 Gr.70. Please
3. reconfirm the material grade.
Material Submittal of Carbon Steel Pipes & Fittings (N17765-M-07-109-4-001) indicates material
grade as API 5L Gr. B.
Also match the mechanical properties used in this calculation against the material grade as per
ASME B31.3.
For e.g. For ASTM A516, Gr 70; min. yield strength is 262 MPa, whereas value stated in this
calculation is 245 MPa.
Stantec Add snip shot for table/reference with highlighting the values for quality factor (E) and weld joint
4. strength reduction factor (W) with respect to proposed material grade.
Stantec Please check value stated for minimum yield strength (Y) with respect to proposed material
5. grade.
Add snip shot for table/reference with highlighting the values for Y.

Stantec Demonstrate how value of mechanical allowances (c) is derived. Clearly indicate each allowance
8. value (mill, corrosion, erosion, etc.) separately.
Stantec Check the equation for minimum crotch length. It shall be as below.
9.
Stantec Contractor shall ensure that the miter bend weights are considered in the pipe stress analysis as
10. per derived total length of miter bend, selected thickness and material grade.
Comments applicable to all branch connection wall thickness calculation (Part B):
B
Stantec It is noted that, submitted branch connection wall thickness calculation is in accordance
11. with ASME B31.3.
However, as per W-P-SS-002, section 4.1, “The wall thickness of water piping
components shall be determined by the Design Engineer considering the applicable
design conditions, in accordance with ASME B31.4 code and OWNER design guideline as
applicable”.
Also, as per W-P-SS-002, section 4.3, “In general, fittings shall be in accordance with ASME
B31.4 unless otherwise mentioned.”
Please clarify the reason for calculating the branch connection wall thickness in accordance with
ASME B31.3.

Stantec It is noted that, in this calculation, fitting material grade is stated as ASTM A516 Gr.70. Please
12. reconfirm the material grade.
Material Submittal of Carbon Steel Pipes & Fittings (N17765-M-07-109-4-001) indicates material
grade as API 5L Gr. B.
Also match the mechanical properties used in this calculation with the stated material grade as
per ASME B31.3.
For e.g. For ASTM A516, Gr 70; min. yield strength is 262 MPa, whereas value stated in the
calculation is 245 MPa.
Stantec 2.1 Branch connection Data:
13.
Indicate reference from where the run tee outside diameter and branch tee outside diameter
values are derived.
i.e., whether it is refereed from pipe wall thickness calculation or selected from standard pipe
thickness from ASME B36.10 and verified for allowable stress values.
Stantec 2.2 Material Data:
14.
Add snip shots of respective tables (in Appendix) from where values are referred against the
material grade.
Stantec Demonstrate from where run pipe and branch pipe nominal wall thickness values are derived
15. since these are not matching with the values stated in the pipe wall thickness calculation
submittal.
Stantec Expand the section for run pipe and branch pipe pressure design thickness values calculation.

Stantec Add reference of selected value of reinforcement pad wall thickness (Tr).
17.
Check calculated value of outer diameter of reinforcement pad (ODpad). It is not matching with 2
x d2
Stantec Add equation for calculation of available reinforcement area in pad (Ar), in branch weld field
18. (Aw1) and pad weld field (Aw2).
TRANSCO The wall thickness shall be verified by the piping stress analysis and hydraulic calculations.
19. KY / AAM Contractor shall be responsible for any required design changes, if necessary, as per the pipeline
stress analysis.
Please also specify the maximum surge pressure that the selected wall thickness can withstand.
Surge pressure during the surge analysis shall not exceed this value. Please confirm.
TRANSCO Add the load case for checking bucking pressure for scenario of external loadings of dead load
20. KY / AAM plus compactor loads during construction, considering that 2 layers of 300 mm above the pipe
crown would be manually compacted followed by dynamic compaction with a certain roller or
plate compactor weight.
TRANSCO The collapsing pressure due to the external loads shall be checked pursuant to equation # 4.4 &
21. KY / AAM 4.4M vide AWWA M-11.
TRANSCO Buckling shall be checking for the allowable stress for above ground pipework (for e.g., pipework
22. KY / AAM inside pump hall, pipework at reservoir inlet) where external pressure (collapsing pressure) can
apply. Therefore, please the pipe collapsing pressure due to external loads shall be checked for
above ground pipework as per AWWA M11, Section - EXTERNAL PRESSURE—EXPOSED OR
SUBMERGED PIPE.
Also add a clause in Section 4.2 b stating "Buckling for above ground pipe" for external load
condition.

TRANSCO Contractor shall refer to ASME B31.4 # 403.2.5 “The designer is cautioned that susceptibility to
23. KY / AAM flattening, ovality, buckling, and denting increases with D/t ratio, decreased wall thickness,
decreased yield strength, and combinations thereof. Pipe having a D/t ratio greater than 100 may
require additional protective measures during construction”.
Contractor to verify and confirm if any additional protective measures are needed during
construction.
Note: The above comments and/or approvals do not relieve the Contractor from his contractual obligations to ensure conformance to the specifications. Any
deviation(s) found after this approval are to be corrected by the Contractor to the satisfaction of the OWNER/ENGINEER.
Also, it is to be understood that these comments and/or approval shall not be interpreted in anyway as limiting the CONTRACTOR's responsibilities
and obligations to provide a safe working place complying with all related regulations. The execution of subject work shall complete with all necessary
requirements to facilitate and ensure trouble free operation, maintenance, and safety of the complete installation.
