Mother nature needs our help

Every day, the same students and TAMIU staff are coming and going from every

building to get to where they need to go. Yet, there is something that stands in plain sight that

almost no one notices as they walk by, but rather an important message that’s calling for our

help. These messages are coming from white posters that are in certain buildings within the

university that is calling for volunteers, which is an institute called TAMIU Garden. TAMIU

Garden is a university institute focusing on nature and providing free agriculture learning. Their

free volunteer service also gives a future benefit to participating individuals learning how to

garden on their own at home or away from home.

TAMIU Garden uses posters around campus to advertise a free volunteering service to

work for their garden and learn more about agricultural skills. The institute provides contact

information of their phone number, e-mail, and social media profile if anyone wants to seek

interest in volunteering for the institute as a community, or if the individual has any questions.

TAMIU Garden uses posters because they did not want to reach out to a specific audience within

the university by email. The poster is intended not just for the individuals in the university, but

it’s rather for anyone who is a visitor to the university. Such as local residents, out-of-town

residents, and interns are also invited to this optional volunteer service.

The organization uses the poster convention of naming the organization in big, bold

letters, and a custom text style at an easy-to-spot location on the poster, also that can be seen

from far away. Specifically, TAMIU Garden names itself, "TAMIU Garden," in big, bold

lettering at the very top of the poster. It even uses colors to distinguish its name: Maroon and

Green. Maroon is for the school color, and green is for the garden. Along with that, there is more

than 1 contact information below the text that says who is welcome. The possible reason why

there are too many contact options is that they put the most common way to reach out on top, and

the least common decending. The TAMIU Garden provides education on managing a garden,

identifying plants, basic agricultural skills, and growing produce such as vegetables, fruits, and

trees. The institute is also great for students who are studying anything that is part of biology, or

any field related to agriculture or nature. The institute mostly focuses on educating the public and

the on-campus students to learn more about the aspects of plants, spread awareness about the

planet’s current state, and why plants are important to us and the planet. As most people either

know or don’t know, plants play a very important role in life that is a need for us, which is called

photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the cycle of a plant that uses light energy from the sun, carbon

dioxide, and water to convert to chemical energy and transform it into a sugar form of fresh new

oxygen. So, in simple terms, it’s like free air.

That being said, TAMIU Garden uses posters around campus to advertise a free

volunteering service to work for their garden and learn more about agricultural skills, because

their purpose is to advertise a free volunteer service for their community. This is important

because it shows that this community is trying to reach out to anyone who may be interested in

their outdoor activities, and not just a certain amount of people. Their service is quite fun, and

very beneficial when it comes to certain events. Learning how gardening works, identifying

plants, and understanding why plants are important to us is something very opportunistic. As the

poster mentioned, everyone is welcome to join as a volunteer and not just the individuals in the

university. On a side note, it is very important for us to know why some communities have their

ways to communicate with different audiences in certain ways. Depending on what a community

puts on their posters, letters, bulletins, or anything that has to do to catch the attention of people

walking by, will always have a reason and a purpose for why they were saying this and to whom.

Analyzing plays a role to help us understand others who are unreachable, and crack the code of

what this message means and its purpose.
