A JOB INTERVIEW: EXAMPLE

A-Come in, please!

B-Good morning.

A- Good morning. Sit down.


B- Thank you.

A-Now, your name’s John Smith, isn’t it?

B-Yes, that’s right.

A- Well, let’s begin. First, I will explain a little about the job and the sort of person we
are looking for. The vacancy is for a plant operator/ a lab technician/ a mechanic.
We would prefer somebody with a / an INTERMEDIATE VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN
LABORATORY/ CHEMISTRY/VEHICLE ELECTROMECHANICS/ HNC in
LABORATORY/CHEMISTRY/ MECHANICS and preferably with some experience.
However, we are prepared to consider anybody on their merits. Perhaps you would
like to explain something about yourself.
B- Well, I am twenty-six and I am single. Regarding my studies, I completed secondary
education and A level exams (the equivalent of A levels) and then, after I did an
intermediate vocational training in Chemistry/ Vehicle Electromechanics…/ the
access (entrance) exams to a superior studies/HNC in Industrial Chemistry/ in
Laboratory and Quality Control/ MECHANICS.
A- What about your level of English. As you already know this is an American company
and the official language is English. So, you are expected to know and to understand
English to a reasonable level as all our notices and internal communications are in
English.
B- Initially, I learnt basic English during primary and secondary education and
subsequently, I completed the first three courses of The Official Language School in
Tarragona and during the Intermediate Vocational Training and then, during the
HNC, one of the subjects was Technical English.
A- Have you ever used your English in real situations? I ask because here it is often
necessary to talk to colleagues from Holland or customers from other countries.
B- I am used to chatting on the net but I’ve only had a little spoken practice, but my
intention is to continue my English studies.
A- What are your interests or hobbies?
B- I’m an enthusiastic sportsman. I play basketball, football and I go jogging. I also like
reading scientific magazines and I enjoy photography.

A-Good, thank you very much for your time. I have to interview a number of other
people and we will make a decision some time next week. So, the company/ The Human
Resources Department will get in touch to let you know our decision.

B-Thank you very much. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Good bye.
