COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is a comprehensive study of the basic Japanese language and culture. It
introduces students to various daily expressions that can be used in simple situations as well as
learning how to use Japanese grammatical patterns necessary to compose basic sentences. It
also introduces students to the Japanese syllabary that will equip them to correctly pronounce
words such as vocabulary, phrases and expressions that can be applied in various situations.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this course, you must be able to:

1. Understand and appreciate the uniqueness of Japanese culture.


2. Express ideas through reading and speaking Japanese vocabulary and at the same
time learn to make own sentences using the Japanese grammatical patterns
3. Converse using the appropriate daily expressions.

The students should:


1. Submit all course requirements on or before scheduled or arranged due dates
2. Communicate with the faculty in-charge pertaining to the course throughout the term

Usually conversations start from the greeting.
When we meet someone and start talking, we use greetings first. For example,
“Good morning, how are you?”
And it is also the beginning of our good relationship.
Let’s start from the greeting. To know more each other,
Let’s learn how to introduce ourselves.

Japan has a distinct, fascinating culture that is unlike any other countries, and will
leave a lasting impression with you… Japanese culture has many different uniquely
interesting aspects, both modern and traditional, such as: cuisine, architecture,
performing arts, fashion, anime, manga, and Geisha.

“SAN” is added to the given name or family name of the listeners or a third
person to show the speaker’s respect to that person.
It should never be used with the speaker’s own name.
“KUN” is also added to the names, usually to the younger male.
“CHAN” is added to small children’s names instead of “SAN” to indicate familiarity.
“SENSEI” is used for the teachers, doctors, congressman and lawyer.
