Objectives

a. Solving word problem involving oblique triangles.

Let’s Recall
There are five cases that will be consider in solving oblique triangles.
1. When three sides are given.
2. When two sides and the included angle are given.
3. When two sides and an opposite angle are given.
4. When two angles and an opposite side are given.
5. When two angles and the included side are given.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Case 1. When three sides are given.

1. To solve for the first angle, apply the cosine law. Choose the angle opposite the smallest side.
2. Then use the cosine law to solve for the second angle.
3. The third angle is computed from the relation: A + B + C = 180°
Example 1. a = 15, b = 10, c= 20
Case 2. When two sides and the included angle are given.
1. Apply the cosine law to solve for the third side.
2. Then use the cosine law to solve for the second angle.
3. The third angle is computed from the relation: A + B + C = 180°
Example 2. a = 8, b = 12, C = 80°

Case 3. When two sides and an opposite angle are given.

1. To solve for the second angle (opposite the other given side), apply the sine law.
2. Apply A + B + C = 180° to compute for the value of the third angle.
3. To solve for the third side, apply the sine law again.
Example 3: a = 30, b = 20, and A = 60°
Case 4. When angles and an opposite side are given.
1. To solve for the second side (opposite the other given angle), apply the sine law.
2. Apply A + B + C = 180° to compute for the value of the third angle.
3. To solve for the third side, apply the sine law again.
Example 4: a = 4.56, A = 43°, and C = 57°

Case 5. When two angles and an included side are given.

1. Apply A + B + C = 180° to compute for the value of the third angle
2. To solve for the second and third side, apply the sine law.
3. Apply A + B + C = 180° to compute for the value of the third angle.
4. To solve for the third side, apply the sine law again.
Example 5: r = 8.5, P = 68°, and Q = 54°
EXAMPLE WORD PROBLEMS:

Answer: The distance between A to B is 22. 06 feet
