The project's implementation timeline will lead us through the actions to be

completed and will aid us in meeting the project's objectives and aims. This
project will be effective with the collaboration and assistance of the officials of
the barangay Don Mariano.

VI. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

a. Background
Various barangays have varied difficulties in terms of
community sanitation, stability, and security, as well as how their
barangay officials rule to address each issue.

DMM stands for Don Mariano Marcos, a barangay in the

municipality of Bayombong in the province of Nueva Vizcaya. As
every other barangay in Bayombong, life in the village is simple.
Children are playing outside; people are walking on the streets;
and public transportation is congested, especially during rush
hour. In the community, there is a community center that caters to
those who require assistance. Around the community, there are
also numerous sari-sari stores, cafeterias, restaurants, and fast
food chains. Information was gathered at Barangay Don Mariano
Marcos Purok 1-3, where Saint Mary's University Main Campus is
located, and the most cited difficulties were common illnesses (flu

and dengue), mosquito infestation, and a shortage of medical
equipment in their barangay.

Mosquitoes have plagued mankind for millennia, causing

millions to die from disease. Mosquitoes have the capacity to move
and disseminate infections to humans, which can result in a
number of viruses such as fever, dengue, malaria, and even death.
Despite attempts to prevent mosquito-borne diseases, they
continue to threaten hundreds of millions of people and kill more
than half a million people each year.

Mosquito repellents can be an excellent way to protect

oneself against mosquito bites. There are a variety of repellent
products on the market, some of them are very powerful, while
others are ineffective. Sprays and smoke repellants, particularly
baygon, katol, and incense, are widely used in our society.
Chemical mosquito repellants, on the other hand, are not safe to
inhale and can cause major respiratory issues or allergic reactions,
according to studies. These compounds can be harmful to inhale in
big doses and may even cause cancer. Furthermore, certain well-
known beneficial treatments, such as the usage of mosquito nets,
are impracticable in specific contexts and so are not routinely
employed by community members.

According to a 2011 study, the strong odor of lemongrass oil

killed or fully repelled roughly 95 percent of mosquitos from a
variety of species. Lemon grass and oregano are frequently utilized
for medical, food, and insect repellant purposes, according to a
New Tech Bio article, and are regarded good antiseptic and insect
repellent items. We made a candle out of it, and it's now known as
"Mosquito Repellant Candle." Oregano oil has active compounds
including carvacrol, thymol, and terpinene, which have been
shown to be incredibly beneficial in repelling mosquitoes.
Lemongrass includes citronella, a natural oil that has long been
used as a natural insect repellent by people of many cultures
around the world.

Insect repellents have a variety of properties, but they all

perform the same function: to keep disease-carrying insects away

from ourselves and our environment. We decided that this would
be the product for which we wanted to perform a study on the
effectiveness of lemon grass and oregano oil as natural mosquito
repellents. We intended to promote the product by encouraging
people to explore natural plant-based repellents such as lemon
grass and oregano, which are both safe and simple to manufacture
and apply. While the candle provides light during brownouts, it
also keeps mosquitos at bay.

Because Saint Mary's University situated in Barangay Don

Mariano Marcos, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, the majority of the
residents are entrepreneurs. We were able to observe and
understand life in the town and its people using our needs
assessment tool.

For the following criteria, we were able to select Don Mariano

Marcos, or DMM, as the community to assess:
✓ Accessible
Considering Saint Mary's University is a member of the
chosen community, proponents can assess and observe the
state of their living more easily.
✓ Cost-effective
Given Barangay DMM is within a short walk from Saint
Mary's University, the proponents did not need to travel,
take public transportation, or spend a lot of money to visit
the community.
✓ Efficient
For the proponents, it is more practical because they did
not waste a lot of time. As a result, their work will be more
efficient and practical.
✓ Familiarity with the surroundings
To be able to cope with the community's principal
concern, proponents should first become familiar with their
surroundings (particularly where the proponent's school is
located).

b. Justification of the project

The aforementioned concerns should be highlighted and
prioritized since flu symptoms, if not addressed and treated

effectively, can develop to a more serious illness. Furthermore,
because most mosquitoes were and still are known to carry the
disease "dengue," if this case is not initiated by barangay officials,
more cases will be appended, and due to the fact that dengue is a
fatal disease, if not cured as soon as reasonably practicable, the
barangay's dengue rate will likely increase rather than decrease.
Moreover, medical equipment is necessary in each barangay for
emergency purposes, and as the survey indicated that Barangay
Don Mariano Marcos lacks medical equipment, the barangay is
considered inadequate in the case of a disaster. Those are one of
the barangay's most pressing issues. To solve these problems, our
project offered a product that will be of great use to the community
in reducing the number of cases. Our product is a candle infused
with the essential oils of lemon grass and oregano leaves, which
can assist to reduce mosquitoes considering lemon grass and
oregano have both been proven to repel mosquitoes.

Insect repellents are useful for preventing bug-borne

diseases as well as bothersome or aggravating insect bites. One of
the insect repellents is lemongrass. Malaria, Lyme disease, dengue
fever, and bubonic plague outbreaks are all diseases spread by
insects, and it can help prevent and manage them. Lemongrass
can repel mosquitoes and is a simple and effective natural insect
repellent. The combination of wax and oregano oil works well as an
insect repellant. Caroll, an organic chemical found in oregano, is
good for killing mosquitos. It was also discovered that during
brownouts, it provided a dual purpose of lighting up the house
while also killing insects.

Because of the chemicals present in oregano such as

carvacrol, thymol, and p-cymeme, oregano oil can be utilized as a
natural insect repellent. The impact of oregano oil repellence,
emerge, and mortality of maize weevil and big borer grain was
investigated in a study employing oregano oil. Oregano (oreganum
vulgare) has been documented on numerous occasions as having
the repellent properties needed to prevent and defend ourselves
against the health concerns that these arthropods cause in our
society. Some gardeners grow oreganos to ward against pests like
mosquitos, while others claim the essential oil repels mosquitos.

Although there isn't enough scientific proof to back up this claim,
oregano includes two compounds with established repellent
characteristics, and because oregano is "generally recognized as
safe" by the US Food and Drug Administration, it won't hurt to try.

c. Benefits derived from the project

o A healthier environment within the barangay of Don Mariano
Marcos
o Reduced costs for buying branded mosquito repellents
o Helped increase the vigilance and immunity when utilized
o Affirmed for the burning clean and chemical free of the product
o Residents’ welfare within the barangay has strengthened
o Diminished liability, material, and equipment acquisition costs

d. Coverage of the project

The project proposal is expected to take two months to be
accomplished. We have two months to conduct an interview to
determine the dilemmas in their neighborhood. Afterwards, create
a plan for the final project and discuss potential solutions to the
community's identified problems. Then only, we can continue on
to gathering resources, product development, product testing,
project dissemination, and finally, holding a webinar for the
barangay. Furthermore, we should be able to deliver the
anticipated outcomes for the objective of our project proposal: to
alleviate mosquito infestation concerns. For this prototype, we
need to involve residents of Don Mariano barangay and coordinate
with them so that we can conduct an interview and evaluation. We
have what we term evaluation after the product has been
distributed. The efficiency of lemongrass and oregano essential oil
as mosquito repellent candles will be assessed employing survey
and simulation. Residents will be prompted to participate in a
survey to see whether the modified candle mosquito repellent is
feasible and beneficial. A quality check will be essential to
ascertain that the product meets the quality plan's specifications.
Additionally, a simulation will also be performed to detect and
eradicate any current and anticipated issues.

ESSENTIAL OIL MAKING

1) Plant Gathering and Drying

- Get at least one stalk of lemongrass leaves and one handful of oregano
leaves, wash both with tap water and cut into small pieces. Put the
leaves in an area not reached by sunlight. Wait for until when the leaves
are crispy.
2) Mixing the Oil and Leaves
- Get a clean container, pour the palm oil and pour the dried leaves, and
mix thoroughly. Set aside to be infused in the candle.
-
CANDLE MAKING PROCEDURE

1) Find a clean glass jar with a wide opening

- The most appropriate type of jar in making candles are some sort of heat-
resistant containers, such as a mason jar or an old candle holder where
the melted wax will be poured into.
2) Cut the Candle wax into small cubes
SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY
Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya

NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM (NSTP)

- Breakdown the chosen wax into cubes. Be sure to have enough amount
of wax because wax shrinks a little when it hardens or during the cooling
process.
3) Boil the candle wax in a double boiler
- Fill the double boiler with water and place it on the stove, then fill the
smaller chamber with wax. Wait until the wax melt.
- If there is no available double boiler, you can improvise by filling a large
pot part-way with water and placing a smaller container which is also
heat-resistant inside the pot. Afterwards, place the candle wax into the
smaller container and set the large pot onto the stove.
4) Add the Lemongrass and Oregano essential oil to the melted wax
- Use about ½ teaspoon or 10 drops of oil per one pound of wax. You can
add more essential oil if you’d like a more potent candle.
5) Cut the candle wick to its desired measure
- Measure out the candle wick and cut it with a pair of scissors. The wick
should be a few inches longer than your chosen container; you will be
trimming the wick down later.
6) Insert, attach and secure the candle wick in the container
- Take the candle wick and dip one end into the hot wax, then slip the
wick into the container. When the wax hardens it will affix the wick to
the bottom of the jar securing it.
7) Pour the wax into the jars
- Carefully lift the container holding the wax off of the double boiler or
large pot and pour the melted wax into the container. Leave about 1-inch
space from the rim of the container.
8) Wait until your candle has cooled
- The candle has cooled if it is solid colored. Most uncolored waxes will
appear white when they have cooled.
9) Trim your wick
SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY
Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya

NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM (NSTP)

- Once the candle has cooled, trim the excess candle wick to the desired
measure.
10) Packaging of the product
- The candle upon manufacture will be packed individually accordingly
containing safety guidelines and protocols that will instruct the users the
proper way to use the product to keep the users away from harm and to
prevent potential problems to arise.

Product description
- The finished product would look similar to the presented photo, only
differs depending on the container that will be used.
