Summary

Fire is an event rather than a thing. It naturally occurs when the three elements, namely,
heat, fuel and oxygen are present and combined creating a chemical reaction. This is what is termed
as the Fire Triangle.

There are several causes of fire, but on top of the list are cooking equipment, smoking and
heating equipment.

In America, home fire is the number one disaster threat. It kills more American than
earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes combined.

In the Philippines, fire is also listed as one of the most common hazards that cause death,
especially in Metro Manila. The month of March is even declared as Fire Prevention Month in this
country. Ironically, it is during this month that there are so many fire problems.

Fire, like other hazards should be addressed properly to reduce its risk and damage that it
may cause to life and property. It should be a part of disaster preparedness plan for every school and
family.

Assessment Task

Answer the following questions:

1. Identify the three elements of the Fire Triangle and explain how fire is created.

The three elements of the Fire Triangle are the Fuel, Oxygen, and Heat. And these three
elements when combined together, it will create a chemical reaction resulting to a fire.

2. Enumerate the different causes of fire. Identify the top three most commons cause of fire
and explain why?
The cooking equipment is the top most common cause of home structure fires and home
fire injuries. Example of this is the kitchen stove which is left unattended. Therefore, be
cautious to remain where you are using a heat source for cooking. If you are unable to stay
inside the entire time, ask a family member or companion to keep an eye on what you are
cooking. Also use a timer to keep track of the cooking process when preparing meals for an
extended length of time.
The second one is smoking which is the leading cause of civilian fire deaths. Example of it is
the improperly extinguished cigarette in a room which can start a fire since the flame may
linger for several hours. If it came into touch with combustible objects, like furniture, it may
catch fire.
The last one is heating equipment. Example of this are portable heaters. It should be at least
one meter away from anything that is flammable, including clothing, drapes, furniture,
washing, and even oneself. Also, the furnace, it should be ensured if it is operating according
to safety requirements and should be tested once a year. If not, it will result to fire.

3. Summarize the basic response procedures during a fire incident. Memorize it and start
sharing it to your family, classmates & friends. Post a photo in your Facebook account while
sharing it to your family, friends or relatives.
